TODAY'S LEARNING
2025 Lunar Phases
Below is a concise overview of the Moon’s phases throughout the year 2025, along with a few interesting highlights about eclipses and what to look out for in the night sky. (Note: Exact dates and times can vary slightly by time zone, so always check a reliable astronomical calendar or local sources for your region.)
The Lunar Cycle in 2025
Key Phases Each Month
New Moon – The Moon is between Earth and the Sun, and its sunlit side faces away from us. This phase is ideal for stargazing since the sky is darker.
First Quarter – We see half of the Moon’s disk lit up. A good time to observe the Moon’s craters and mountains with binoculars or a telescope.
Full Moon – The Moon’s disk is fully illuminated from our vantage point. Traditionally, each month’s Full Moon has its own name (e.g., Wolf Moon in January, Harvest Moon in early autumn).
Last Quarter – Again, half the disk is lit, but the opposite side compared to First Quarter.
Over the course of 2025, there will be 12 full lunar cycles (New Moon to New Moon), each lasting about 29.5 days. Full Moons will roughly occur once every month, shifting a bit earlier or later compared to the previous month.
Below is a general guide to the approximate timing of full Moons in 2025 (all dates are UTC-centered estimates, so local dates may differ by a day):
January: Mid-month
February: Early/mid-month
March: Mid-month
April: Mid-month
May: Early/mid-month
June: Early/mid-month
July: Early/month
August: Early/month
September: Early/month
October: Early/month
November: Late-month
December: Late-month
Because of the continuous shift (around one day earlier each month), you may occasionally see two full Moons in the span of a single calendar month in some years. However, in 2025, each month neatly hosts just one Full Moon.
Notable Eclipses
Lunar eclipses occur when the Earth casts its shadow on the Moon. In 2025, skywatchers can look forward to at least one significant eclipse event:
March 14, 2025 (Total Lunar Eclipse): In some parts of the world, observers will see Earth’s shadow completely cover the Moon’s surface, giving it a deep reddish hue (often called a “Blood Moon”).
A partial lunar eclipse may also occur later in the year (around early September), where only a portion of the Moon dips into Earth’s umbral shadow.

ZEN STORY
The Monk & The Tiger
A monk and his disciple traverse a forest, the monk sharing musings of life and connectedness. The disciple, finally sensing the true meaning of life, turns to his master;
"I understand - we are all one".
The monk nods, smiling, and they continue on their path.
A tiger appears.
The disciple observes the tiger calmly, turning to the monk again only to realise the monk is nowhere to be seen. He looks up and sees the monk clinging to a tree.
"Master, I don't understand? We are all one! I cannot fear myself!", he calls.
"The tiger doesn't know that! Get in that tree!".
