Put your feet firmly into the ground as you stand on your mat. Breathe in and out from the center of your belly. Put your hands in the area of the heart. Do you yet feel your body beginning to awaken from the inside out? You are now prepared to perform the Sun Salutation or Surya Namaskara.

Why Salute the Sun?

In all of its forms, Surya Namaskara is a fundamental sequence that serves as the foundation of almost all yoga practices. Surya Namaskara is a ritual that dates back to the ancient Hindu scriptures known as the Vedas and is usually performed an hour before sunrise. It has countless advantages for both our bodies and minds and teaches us to worship the sun, which is our main source of light and life.

Earth's largest star is essential to our continued existence, just like food, water, and shelter are. Not only does it make the world turn, but we depend on it for warmth, light and vitamin D. Surya Namaskara means "humble adoration of light" in Sanskrit. In reality, we are reawakening our own consciousness while worshiping our most basic form of life.

Surya Namaskara A Series

Like many vinyasas, Surya Namaskara A can vary from practice to practice, depending on your comfort level and yoga knowledge. It typically involves the following series of asanas:

Samasthiti (Tadasana or Mountain Pose), Urdhva Hastasana (Upward Salute), Uttanasana (Standing Forward Bend), Ardha Uttanasana (Half Standing Forward Bend), Chaturanga Dandasana (Plank Pose), Urdhva Mukha Svanasana (Upward-facing Dog Pose), Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward-facing Dog Pose), Transition – feet to hands, Ardha Uttanasana, Uttanasana, Urdhva Hastasana, Samasthiti

Greek tourism authorities are installing self-operating wheelchair ramps on 287 beaches across the nation, citing access to the sea as a fundamental human right.

Self-operating means that wheelchair users can operate it by themselves without assistance from a friend or employee, offering a flexible freedom rarely found in difficult terrain such as beach sand.

147 beaches have already had the Seatrac system installed by construction workers so that people with disabilities can take advantage of swimming in the nation's renowned blue waters.
