TODAY'S LEARNINGAncient Yogic Philosophies

The practices of Hatha yoga today are beautifully entwined with the yogic principles and scriptures of ancient times. The physical asanas we practice in yoga studios, gyms, festivals, and online are all directly related to the ancient texts that date back thousands of years. The ancient texts provide us with additional disciplines to help us reach enlightenment, and asanas support this path.

Our reality is shaped by our thoughts.

Patanjali, who is frequently referred to as the founder of yoga, was an expert at controlling his consciousness to have only powerful thoughts. He was an expert at making his ideas come true. One of the lessons at the core of the ancient texts is that: Our thoughts shape our reality, and whatever we focus on expands and shows up in our lives.

Wisdom of the Heart

The ancient scriptures also place a strong emphasis on heart-centered awareness. This is the idea that our true wisdom and intelligence are located in the energy center directly to the right of the physical heart. Not in the brain, either. The anahata chakra is where one gets their real intuition from. This energetic center is deeper than the feelings of sadness, grief, melancholy, etc. that we often associate with the heart.

Our physical world is an illusion.

Another important message from the ancient texts is that the material world is ultimately an illusion known as maya. It's not the Real Absolute. We will endure suffering and keep repeating harmful habits and behaviors if we remain trapped in this illusory world, or samsara, for countless lifetimes. And why would we want that?

In order to achieve enlightened awareness and to free ourselves from human suffering, the ancient scriptures offer us strategies and tales about how to break free from samsara.

Learn Non-Attachment

We do this by practicing non-attachment from the material world. Because our desires are brief, we let them go. They come and go all the time, and as soon as we get one, we want another. It's a never-ending cycle of "I want this" and "I don't want that." According to the yoga teachings, we can rise above this state of consciousness and eventually experience a profound sense of well-being known as santosha, which never changes and never disappears.

The scriptures also instruct us that when we perfect the art of yielding to the Divine, or Ishvara, we can achieve freedom from suffering. We can come to believe in a higher power and develop a sense of connection with it. We are given a variety of tools to help us get there, including mantra, asana, mudra, pranayama, and other teachings.

POSITIVE NEWS OF THE DAY

Researchers recently discovered that for senior citizens, every 500 extra daily steps lowers the risk of heart problems.

Adults who walked about 4,500 steps per day had a 77 percent lower risk of having a cardiovascular event, such as a heart attack or stroke, compared to those who walked less than 2,000 steps per day.

Over a 3.5-year study period, only 3.5% of participants who averaged 4,500 steps per day experienced a cardiovascular event, compared to 11.5% of those who averaged less than 2,000 steps per day.
