TODAY'S LEARNING
Anti-New Years Resolutions

Although making resolutions for the new year was once a way to commit to faith and community, it has since changed to often focus on things like diet and exercise. Although the New Year can feel like a fresh start and it can be great to establish plans, it's not the best time to make significant changes, particularly if you want to cut back on calories and increase exercise.

The coldest and darkest month of the year is January in the Northern Hemisphere. This is generally a period of inactivity, rest, and introspection. In the past, the Roman calendar counted backwards from March to December, which is known as the "tenth month" from March. Originally, January and February had no names at all since everyone was merely sleeping during this time and not much was happening.

A Protestant sense of guilt and self-punishment sometimes permeates some of us' New Year's resolutions, especially following the excesses of the holiday season. Despite this, January is often recognized as the most challenging month for mental health, and very few of us follow through on our resolutions past March. What if we made a conscious effort to support our bodies' demands instead of fighting them?

These are five New Year's resolutions that could truly improve your mood, promote wellbeing, and help you get off to a positive start.

Get More Sleep

We need more sleep when there is more darkness. Without access to artificial light, some studies have revealed that people would sleep significantly more during the winter than during the summer. People who live in cities with lots of artificial light, for example, typically sleep up to an hour longer in December than in June.

Depending on what’s possible for you, resolve to go to bed a little earlier, wake up a little later, and/or find time for a nap, even a short one, every day in January and see how it affects your general health and wellbeing.

Eat More Warm, Cooked Foods

According to Ayurveda, we have digestive fire in our bellies called agni. Agni is hot and elevated in summer, allowing us to digest a wide variety of foods, even raw and cold ones. Our agni is lower in the winter, therefore warm, prepared foods like soups and stews suit us considerably better. January typically sees a decrease in food stores and a limited selection of fresh, cold meals. The majority would have been stored and cooked. We are lucky enough to live in an era when most of us can enjoy a variety of foods any time of the year, so eat! However, respect what your body requires right now and give it gentle nourishment.

Resolve to stop eating cold foods during the winter (unless your body really likes them) and instead opt for bone broth, spiced soups, cooked vegetables, and other warm and cozy foods. Put away the ice water and have a cup of tea or hot water with lemon instead, especially right before you eat.

Try Restorative Yoga

Yes, exercise is beneficial throughout the year, but in January, our bodies respond best to a quick walk at midday when the sun is up. Lying down in very comfortable positions and testing our ability to relax profoundly is the practice of restorative yoga.

Make it your goal to attend a restorative yoga session; ideally, it should be at a studio with lots of props and a teacher who can assist you in falling into a deep, nourishing sleep.

Make Things Easier on Yourself

The finest thing I ever did for New Year's was to always ask myself, "How can I make this easier?"

Rather than getting all caught up in the complications and details of whatever I was doing, I’d pause to see if I could ask for help, delegate something, re-prioritize, drop what wasn’t useful, lower expectations, and generally intend to make it all a little easier. There's generally a way to make it work, but we frequently neglect to consider the possibility that we're complicating things needlessly.

Resolve to slow down and see if there’s a way to uncomplicate your day-to-day life and any difficult situations you may find yourself in.

Receive Bodywork

January is a month when we have little to give, but we gain a lot from receiving. Make an appointment for a massage, visit a sauna or hot spring, get reiki, or experiment with any other bodywork modality that appeals to you the most. By refilling your own cup, you'll eventually have more to share with others.

Decide to discover a way that would fit into your schedule and budget to give your body some loving attention.

 WEEKLY ASTROLOGY

Welcome to a new year, a new week, and a new combination of whispers, invitations, and opportunities in our cosmos.

On January 1, 2024, Mercury completes its retrograde and begins to travel forward once more, marking the start of a synchronistic new year.

Retrogrades arrive when we are ready to see things in a new way, when we are ready to be shown from a new vantage. They encourage fresh viewpoints on our aspirations, convictions, and life-building. They offer us the chance to alter the stories that keep us in place as we navigate the outside world and rewrite the inner scripts we live by. And as Mercury stations direct, it does so with much to reveal.

January 4, 2024, holds the movement of Mars into Capricorn, where it will join the Sun. That's where it will stay until February 12, 2024.

Mars is the source of our drive, will, force, and motivation. Our passions are the engine that drives us to take action.

As an earth sign controlled by Saturn, Capricorn represents our long-term commitment to the grounded construction of our ideas. It is deliberate, patient, disciplined, and purposeful in its actions.
