TODAY'S LEARNING
Guide to Letting Go of Attachments

We can help dissolve these attachments with a few different practices:

Meditation. Sitting motionless and attempting to focus on the current moment, including your body, your breath, and your surroundings, is the essence of meditation. What you’ll find is that your mind runs away from the present moment, attaching to worries about the future, planning, remembering things in the past. By seeing what your mind is doing and letting go, you can practice letting go of these little attachments during meditation and coming back to the present moment. This keeps happening, so you become proficient at it. It resembles muscle memory from hundreds of thousands of repetitions. You discover that everything to which you were attached was only a dream, a story, or a narrative. It's simply a small amount of cloud that can be carried away by a breeze; nothing too heavy.

Compassion. In this meditation, you wish for an end to your suffering, or an end to the suffering of others. What happens is that this wish transforms you from being stuck in your attachment, to finding a warm heart to melt the attachment and find a way to ease it. When you want your own pain to stop, you transcend your story. When you hope for the end of another person's suffering, you also identify with them, realize that your pain is equal to theirs, and realize that you are all in this together. As a result of these connections, your stories and attachments start to seem less significant and significant.

Interdependence. Consider focusing your meditation on the desire for others to be happy as well as the desire for your own suffering to end. All others, whether you like them or not. Again, through doing this, you start to see that you’re all connected in your suffering, and in your desire to be happy. You and them are not that dissimilar. You are interdependent rather than distinct. You can become less attached and more at ease with life by fostering connections with people.

Accepting. Fundamentally, attachment is the desire to change the state of things from what they are. You're hoping for something distinct. This is a result of your dislike for something—the current situation, the person in front of you, or yourself. By meditating, practicing compassion and interdependence, you can start to trust that things are OK just as they are. They might not be “ideal,” but they are just fine. exquisitely even. And you begin to open up to the actuality of this moment instead of continuing to reject it, as you become more conscious of your repeated rejections. This is the practice, opening and exploring the moment with curiosity and accepting it for what it is, over and over.

Expansiveness. A more broader mind is the outcome of all these activities; one that is able to recognize little desires and aversions as components of a larger picture, rather than being so narrowly focused on its little narrative of how things should be. These small aspirations and much more can be stored in the mind. It’s a wide open space, like a deep blue ocean or dreamy blue sky, and the little attachments are just a part of it, but it can also see the suffering of others and their attachments, it can see the present moment in all its flawed glorious beauty, and be present with all of this at once. Now, put this expansiveness into practice.

TODAY'S POSITIVE NEWS

Scientists have developed a simple blood test that could offer early diagnosis for glial brain tumours in future, improving patient outcomes.

Brain tumours are the deadliest form of cancer for children and adults under 40. Identifying them early is key to boosting survival rates but many tumours go undetected for too long.

The TriNetra-Glio blood test could change that. It works by isolating tumour cells that have broken free from the tumour and are circulating in the blood. The cells are then stained and can be identified under a microscope.

The test was pioneered by scientists at the Brain Tumour Research Centre of Excellence at Imperial College London. Experts said that patients could benefit from the technology in as little as two years.

“A non-invasive, inexpensive method for the early detection of brain tumours is critical for improvements in patient care,” said Imperial College’s Dr Nelofer Syed. “Through this technology, a diagnosis of inaccessible tumours can become possible through a risk-free and patient-friendly blood test.”

ZEN STORY
EGO & ENTITLEMENT

Once a division of the Japanese army was engaged in a sham battle, and some of the officers found it necessary to make their headquarters in Gasan’s temple. Gasan told his cook: “Let the officers have only the same simple fare we eat.” This made the army men angry, as they were used to very deferential treatment. One came to Gasan and said: “Who do you think we are? We are soldiers, sacrificing our lives for our country. Why don’t you treat us accordingly?”

Gasan answered sternly: “Who do you think we are? We are soldiers of humanity, aiming to save all sentient beings.”
