TODAY'S LEARNINGTonglen Meditation: Awaken Deep Compassion

If you’ve ever heard of tonglen meditation, it’s likely you’ve dipped your toe into the contemplative waters of Buddhism.

It's a traditional Buddhist meditation technique that has been shown to arouse empathy and compassion in the minds and hearts of regular practitioners.

What Is Tonglen?

In Tonglen, we absorb other people's suffering on our inhalation and send out healing energy and thoughts on our exhalation.

As you can already see, without practice, we tend to act in the opposite way, especially when we are physically hurt. This is a useful practice to do, regardless of whether we are currently experiencing pain or suffering.

It liberates us from our limited selves and allows us to experience a profound state of open-heartedness.

Yoga and Buddhism both place a strong emphasis on the idea that humans suffer as a result of our relentless pursuit of pleasure.

We need everything to be "good." We desire to feel "good."

But suffering is a part of life, and instead of learning to live with it, we frequently try to avoid it. Tonglen teaches us to turn away from our natural tendency as humans to pursue pleasure and instead learn to sit with others' suffering.

If at first, this practice seems strange to you, you shouldn't feel guilty about it. Being selfish is ingrained in our DNA. The strongest will survive, right? Therefore, it makes sense that this practice might seem odd or unsettling.

TOGETHER WITH FEETSBaby Soft Feet In 60 Minutes

If you have time to watch Netflix, you have time to rejuvenate your feet with the Foot Peel Mask!

In just 60-90 minutes of relaxation, the Foot Peel Mask applies a natural plant-based formula to your feet that gently breaks down dead skin and calluses. Within a few days, your old skin will begin to peel away… leaving vibrant, glowing, baby-soft skin underneath that you’ll be proud to show off.

No more hiding behind closed-toed shoes — the Foot Peel Mask renews your feet to their former glory!

  • It only uses all-natural fruit-based ingredients. Traditional foot masks often use a combination of unknown, harsh, and unregulated chemical ingredients that can burn or damage your skin. On the other hand, FEETS’ Foot Peel Mask uses all-natural, cruelty-free ingredients that are safe for your body.

  • It provides deeper exfoliation. Compared to lotions or serums, the Foot Peel Mask reduces evaporation time, leaving the gentle formula plenty of time to penetrate deep into the skin and work its magic. This gives you deeper exfoliation that’s practically mess-free.

  • The formula is podiatrist-approved and recommended. Developed by leading skincare manufacturers using hand-selected ingredients, this formula contains no parabens, sulfates, phthalates, or synthetic dyes.

TODAY'S POSITIVE NEWS

Photographing the northern lights is nothing out of the ordinary for Todd Slatt, also known as the "Aurora Hunter," but last Saturday he saw something shocking and inspiring emerge from the night sky.

In the distance, a spiral of pale blue light started to form; it grew bigger and got closer to the man who was holding his camera and his breath.

Eventually, it completely sailed past the professional photographer's vantage point in Delta Junction, Alaska, leaving him perplexed.

ZEN STORYYour Attitude is Everything

Two men visit a Zen master. The first man says: “I’m thinking of moving to this town. What’s it like?” The Zen master asks: “What was your old town like?” The first man responds: “It was dreadful. Everyone was hateful. I hated it.”

The Zen master says: “This town is very much the same. I don’t think you should move here.”

The first man leaves and the second man comes in. The second man says: “I’m thinking of moving to this town. What’s it like?” The Zen master asks: “What was your old town like?” The second man responds: “It was wonderful. Everyone was friendly and I was happy. Just interested in a change now.”

The Zen master says: “This town is very much the same. I think you will like it here.”

CRYSTAL OF THE DAY

YOGAPEDIAUtthita Hasta Padangusthasana

Standing postures are performed after Surya namaskar) in order to stretch the legs. Utthita hasta padangustasana is a great example of this as a challenging balance posture. The sequence calls for 15 breaths throughout the duration of this short sequence, not including any transitions.

To perform the pose:

Balance on one leg and catch the opposite big toe in your hand with the leg extended.

Bow forward and touch your nose to the knee of the lifted leg.

Hold for 5 breaths, then lift back up and open the leg out to the side.

Look away from the foot and hold another 5 breaths.

Then, bring the leg back to the center and fold over one more time as you exhale.

Come up immediately on the next inhale and release the big toe while the leg stays lifted in the air.

Continue to hold the leg up for 5 more breaths before releasing to samasthiti (tadasana or mountain pose) on an exhale.

Repeat on the other side.
