Ayurveda and weight - Understanding the link
Ayurveda is one of the oldest and most holistic understandings of how food affects your mind, body, and spirit. Ayurveda addresses imbalances on all levels; physical, mental, and spiritual.
In ayurvedic medicine, your body type is determined by the combination of three doshas – Vata (air), Pitta (fire), and Kapha (water). Doshas are the basis for understanding your body and behavior.
When your Kapha is elevated, it directly results in water retention, while Vata when elevated can increase stress, which means it can directly lead to stress eating.
Associated with metabolism, Pitta dosha is the dosha that balances two opposite doshas - Vata and Kapha, which indicates that it plays an important role in weight loss and weight gain. Primarily, all three doshas represent our ability to process and assimilate forms of energy in the form of physical, chemical, mental, and psychological phenomena. Hence, when your doshas are imbalanced, it can lead to declined metabolism, and thus weight gain.

🧐 DID YOU KNOW?
Conscious eating as per Ayurveda can help you lose weight by bringing your attention back to your food. Conscious eating encourages you to eat slowly and deliberately, without distractions such as television or cell phones. It allows you to pay attention to what happens in your body when you ingest different foods, such as how well your digestive system reacts to them, and helps recognize signs of fullness. And since mindful eating helps you enjoy and appreciate the food you’re eating, you will be more satisfied after every meal and not crave a snack after.
Ayurvedic foods for weight loss
Ayurveda offers a natural approach to weight loss and maintenance. By eating foods that can get the body to balance while boosting your energy, you can overall improve your health. This can further lead to weight loss in a healthy and sustainable way.
Cinnamon - Cinnamon is a powerful spice that has been used for centuries to help with digestion, improve circulation and regulate blood sugar levels. This is because cinnamon contains compounds called chromium, manganese, and fiber, all of which have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, and antimicrobial properties. The most common way to utilize cinnamon is by sprinkling it on food or by consuming it in the form of tea. To brew cinnamon tea, boil a stick of pure cinnamon in water, and add a few lemon drops as well as a spoonful of honey. Sip when hot.
Fenugreek - Fenugreek is a spice whose roots are buried in Asia but has now spread its branches all around the globe. Methi (fenugreek), a well-known herb for weight loss, aids in reducing food cravings and enhances fullness. Additionally, it helps with digestion and increases metabolic rate. The active ingredient in fenugreek, galactomannan, is proven to make the advantages possible. Methi seeds are rich in insoluble fiber, which is essential for healthy digestion and support the elimination of toxins that may have built up. The easiest way to consume fenugreek is in the form of methi water. To make this, take fenugreek seeds weighing 10 grams and soak them in two glasses of boiling water overnight. Drink the filtered water the following morning while also chewing the seeds.
Guggul - Commiphora wightii, or Guggul, is a plant that grows in the arid regions of Africa. Commiphora wightii contains many active compounds, including ketones and fatty acids—both of which are great for helping with weight loss. It improves circulation, helps you feel more satisfied after eating as well as reduces your cravings for sweets, carbs, or salty foods. This rugged yet delicate herb further benefits to bring heightened Vata doshas (i.e. air) and Kapha (earth and water) doshas under control.
Black Pepper - Black pepper is one of the most versatile and beneficial spices in the world. From ancient times, black pepper has been used as a medicine to improve metabolism. Black pepper contains piperine that increases the metabolic rate of your body and helps you lose weight faster. It kick-starts this by improving digestion, relieving gas/ bloating and reducing stress levels by lowering cortisol levels (the stress hormone). The simplest way to add this to your diet is by sprinkling it on your meals or adding it to salads or smoothies. This suggests that if you are adding black pepper to all your meals, you are able to absorb more nutrients from the food.
Yoga Flow For Weight Loss

This yoga flow is designed to give your metabolism a boost and assist with weight loss. It's also great for detoxing and toning your muscles. During this practice, you will notice that your movements are fluid and natural. You'll feel more relaxed than ever before and have a sense of being at peace with yourself and your surroundings.
Before you begin: Take a moment to find your breath and center yourself. Bring your awareness back into the present moment by simply breathing. We'll work with movement as a way of accessing that deep sense of presence—a way of becoming grounded in the here and now, rather than letting our minds wander elsewhere. This isn't about reaching someplace far away: it's about finding peace right where you're at.
Virabhadrasana II (Warrior II)
Virabhadrasana strengthens the thighs, calves and ankles while also improving your balance and posture. Start by standing on the floor with your feet hip-width apart. Following this, put your right leg out 90 degrees and point the toes to the shorter corner of the mat while the toes of your left leg point to the longer end of the mat. You can then spread your arms wide and lean forward until you put your weight on the front foot. As you lean forward, you are using more muscles than when you were standing straight up, which will help burn calories and tone the muscles at the same time. It enables you to achieve a balanced body and mind. Hold this pose for 10 seconds as you come back up while keeping your feet positioned in the same form.
Trikonasana (Triangle Pose)
From the warrior 2 pose, you can then directly transition into Trikonasana. While you’re standing with your right foot still pointing to the other end of the mat, move your upper body forward and parallel to the floor as you bring your right hand to touch the floor while stretching your left hand towards the ceiling. The triangle pose improves digestion by increasing blood flow to the digestive system and improving its function. It also helps remove toxins from cells and tissues thus promoting fat loss.
Downward Dog
The Downward Dog is a splendid pose to stretch out your entire body, including your back, shoulders and arms. It also opens up your chest cavity, so it helps your lungs take in more oxygen while relaxing the mind. The pose is done by getting into the plank position with your hands on the ground and then lifting your hips and pushing your heels. Standing on your hands and knees in the shape of an upside-down "V" pose helps lengthen the back and spine while engaging your core. By extending your body with a downward dog, you strengthen your arms, shoulders, and wrists while also improving posture - qualities that help you lose weight and gain muscle definition.
Sarvangasana – Shoulder Stand Pose
Sarvangasana is one of the most popular yoga poses and it is also known as the shoulder stand pose. The Sanskrit word “Sarva” means all, “Anga” means body parts, and “Asana” means pose. Therefore, Sarvangasana refers to a pose that works on all the body parts. This pose helps tone your muscles and helps improve circulation at the same time which results in better digestion while preventing bloating or constipation which is often associated with weight gain. Lay flat on the mat with your feet together and your hands by your side. Keep your body relaxed, mind at peace, and inhale deeply. As you exhale, bring your feet up toward your hips and curl your legs up against your thighs. Pull the abdominal muscles up while lifting the bottom half of the body vertically while using your hands as support till your abdomen and chest are all aligned.
