TODAY'S LEARNING
Balancing Negative Emotions & The Ego

What is a negative emotion? An emotion that upsets the body's equilibrium and prevents it from working properly. Anxiety, fear, wrath, holding grudges, melancholy, deep hate or hatred, jealousy, and so forth all interfere with the body's natural flow of energy and have an impact on the heart, immune system, digestion, hormone production, and other bodily functions.

Despite its limited understanding of the functioning of the ego, mainstream medicine is starting to acknowledge the link between negative emotional states and physical illness.

An emotion that damages the body affects not just you but also everyone you come into contact with and, inadvertently, a great number of individuals you will never meet through a chain reaction. Unhappiness is a general phrase for any undesirable feelings.

Do happy feelings then have the opposite impact on the body? Do they energize, heal, and fortify the immune system? They do, indeed, but we need to differentiate between positive emotions that are ego-generated and deeper emotions that emanate from your natural state of connectedness with Being.

Good feelings produced by the ego have their opposite already, which they can easily transform into. Here are a few instances: What the ego confuses for love is clutching and possessiveness that can quickly evolve into hate.

Anticipation about an upcoming event, which is the ego’s overvaluation of future, easily turns into its opposite—letdown or disappointment—when the event is over or doesn’t fulfill the ego’s expectations. One moment you feel alive and happy when you receive praise and acknowledgment, and the next you feel depressed and miserable when you receive criticism or disregard it. The joy of a crazy party transforms into hopelessness and a headache the next day. No high without a low, no good without evil.

The mind's identification with outside elements, which are all naturally unstable and subject to change at any time, is the source of ego-generated emotions. The deeper emotions are not really emotions at all but states of Being. Emotions are in the opposites domain. Though they don't have their opposite, states of being can be veiled. They emanate from within you as the love, joy, and peace that are aspects of your true nature.

Buffett vs Banksy: The surprising winner

POSITIVE NEWS OF THE DAY

Dozens of schools went phone-free in England

One of England’s largest academy trusts has announced the phasing out smartphones from its schools.

Ormiston Academies Trust teaches 35,000 children across 42 schools and is rolling out the smartphone ban following a successful trial. “One of our schools has operated like this for a number of years and the approach is really successful and popular with both parents and students,” the trust said in a statement.

It added: “Learning, behaviour and wellbeing are top priorities in our schools, but all can be impacted negatively by smartphones. We want to reduce the risks associated with smartphones in our schools and give young people the freedom to learn, play and socialise without the distraction and social pressures that phones and social media can bring.”

The pushback against smartphones in school is gaining momentum amid research linking them with mental health issues in young children. France is trialling a phone ban at 200 secondary schools, while the Netherlands outlawed the devices at schools in January.
