Picture of The Day

Yoga in Times Square

It’s 9:30 in the morning on a Tuesday. Ordinarily, Times Square would be swarming with people hustling to work, jostling with tourists taking in the sites. But it’s June 21, Summer Solstice, and Times Square is dotted with hundreds of yoga mats. People are setting up for the annual Solstice in Times Square event.

For the past 20 years (minus the period of the pandemic), this annual event has drawn hundreds of people celebrating the summer solstice and International Day of Yoga. On this day, the Times Square Alliance has organized a series of yoga classes—starting at 7:30 in the morning and ending after sundown—a steady stream of wellness amidst the noise and commotion of one of New York City’s busiest centers. This year’s theme: Mind Over Madness.

The 9:30 session, led by Ruchika Lal and presented by the Consulate General of India, emphasizes yoga’s roots on that continent, as well as the global reach of the practice.

“Yoga has been celebrated in the East, in the West, in the North, in the South, in each and every continent and each and every country of the world today. That is how popular the global embrace of yoga is today,” says Consul General Randhir Jaiswal as he introduces the session. He encourages yoga enthusiasts to join the movement with an eye to cultivating unity and togetherness.

Yoga is unity

Experienced Yoga practitioners often feel discouraged when a naturally gifted dancer, gymnast, or martial artist, performs an advanced asana with little effort. You see, there are people with elongated joint capsules and their extraordinary range of motion is a gift.

You and I may have to work at it, but the many rewards of Yoga practice are still there. Yoga consists of many facets, and Asanas, are just one of the many parts of Yoga. Many students who have extraordinary flexibility admit they struggle with other parts of Yoga – such as The student who just can’t calm down to meditate, balancing in asanas, Pranayama, Yogic Philosophy, and so on. Unfortunately, I have seen many promising Yoga practitioners quit practicing Yoga, due to a competitive mindset.

Within their own minds – they were in competition with every student in the class and, possibly, their Yoga teacher too. Remember that Yoga means “union.” In simple terms, we can say union of mind, body, and spirit. There are many more explanations about union, but that could be a separate article. There are also many branches of Yoga and, therefore, many types of union, but competition is far from union.

Competition enhances the ego, and the ego is just a part of your personality. The ego resists union for its own survival. The ego is our social mask and does not want to share anything. Remember, the next time you start to feel envious of another student or teacher – that is not union. If anything, it will hold you back from union and many more valuable contributions that Yoga can make to your life. You will find a variety of Yoga and related topics to learn about. 🧐 DID YOU KNOW?

If you love foods high in saturated fats—cheese, butter, eggs, full-fat coconut milk, red meat—it’s best to have them in the morning, according to a new study from Texas A&M University. That’s because when we eat saturated fats, they circulate in the bloodstream as free fatty acids, which induce inflammation—a condition linked to digestive, metabolic, and immune dysfunction—in fat, muscle, and immune cells. The study showed that this inflammation may be maximized when we consume saturated fats at night, causing our cells’ internal clocks to “jet lag” and triggering metabolic changes that can lead to obesity and diabetes. But there is some good news, say researchers: Unlike saturated fats, polyunsaturated omega-3 fats have an anti-inflammatory effect and can actually counter any sat-fat-triggered inflammation set in motion earlier in the day. So, if you eat a buttery croissant or egg-and-cheese sandwich in the a.m., opt for omega-3–rich salmon or mackerel for lunch or dinner.
