TODAY'S LEARNING
Boost Your Self-Esteem

Improving self-esteem can seem like a huge task, but there are lots of different self-management techniques that can help. Take a look at our list of self-esteem tactics below, which you can use as a guide to start building your confidence and self-esteem.

What are the 4 components of self-esteem?

Your self-esteem is made up from four attitudes you have about yourself: your confidence, your sense of identity, feeling a sense of belonging and being self-assured in your abilities.

Your self-confidence

The foundation of self-confidence is a feeling of security in both your life and yourself. Only if you are confident that your demands are being satisfied can you start to expand and grow. Your physical well-being, secure income, and a place to live are examples of having your needs satisfied.

Your identity

Because it is the knowledge you possess about yourself, your sense of identity plays a crucial role in your self-esteem. This can apply to any aspect of who you are, such as your self-assurance regarding your appearance, gender, sexual orientation, profession, values, and culture. Possessing confidence in these areas is beneficial as it can aid in understanding your needs and goals in life.

Feeling like you belong

Whether it be at work, school, your family, or other groups you are a part of, belonging is all about feeling accepted and involved in where we truly are in life. If you don't feel like you belong in one group—say, your workplace—you might be able to find it in another—say, your family or your friends.

Feeling confident in your abilities

It's critical to have self-assurance in your skills so that you can direct your own destiny in life. You can handle significant obstacles and make the necessary adjustments to address them if you have confidence in your abilities. It goes beyond success to have confidence in your abilities, though. It's about growing from your errors and maintaining your composure when things don't work out.

Why is self-esteem important?

Self-esteem is crucial since it serves as the cornerstone for whatever you do, including daily tasks and long-term objectives. Although self-doubt is a common occurrence for everyone, low self-esteem can lead to:

  • feeling insecure

  • lacking motivation

  • unable to respond to challenges in your life

  • anxious or depressed

  • with negative thoughts and feelings about your body image.

Tips for improving your self-esteem

1. Treat yourself with kindness

You might be surprised to learn how powerful that small voice is that informs you whether you're killing it or not. Make an effort to be kind to yourself and, if you do slip up, try to challenge any negative thoughts. Speak to yourself the same as you would your friends as a general rule of thumb. At first, this may seem incredibly difficult, but practice makes perfect. Here are some tips for talking yourself up if you need them.

Try: Writing down three things that you like about yourself.

2. You do you

It's a certain way to start feeling bad about yourself to compare yourself to other people. Instead of comparing your accomplishments to those of others, try to keep your attention on your own objectives. The kind of pressure that nobody needs!

3. Get movin’

Exercise is a fantastic method to boost confidence, practice goal-setting, and increase motivation. Breaking a sweat also cues the body to release endorphins, the feel-good hormones.
