Morning Mantra To Energize Your Day
"Karagre Vasate Lakshmi
Kara-madhye Saraswati
Kara-mule Sthita Gauri
Prabhate Kara-Darshanam"
The repetition of this mantra is an ancient morning practice and saying it first thing in the morning sets an elevated tone for the day. It asks you to think of all of the actions you will perform as the work of God done through your hands.
Upon awakening, after placing your feet on the floor, look at your hands and say this verse. Afterward, run your hands lightly over your face to awaken it. Then stands and begin your daily practice.
This mantra acknowledges the Divine power of different forms of the goddess that are present in your being and operate (in part ) through your hands. By invoking Lakshmi, you honor your capacity to manifest abundance and beauty in your life. By evoking Saraswati, you enhance your capacity to speak and write eloquently. By evoking another name for the great goddess the shakti at the root of your whole being, you honor the source of all. Honoring the power that exists within you means first seeing your life as an expression of all divine grace. This mantra helps you to offer all your actions back to their Divine source.
THE BENEFITS OF LEMON & SALT WATER IN THE MORNING:
When you wake up, before breakfast, have a glass of water with salt and lemon in it.
Benefits:
Water
We lose approximately 1 liter of water whilst we sleep. So we are in effect in a dehydrated state upon waking. That’s why our mouth goes clammy. When we lose anywhere from 1-3% of water from our bodies we reduce our power and energy output by 7-20%. This means your energy levels and your fat-burning capacity reduce. You also lose cognitive function, meaning you can’t think properly. A glass of water upon waking helps replenish fluid lost during sleep.
Lemon (or lime)
Lemon tastes acidic, however, it is in fact alkalizing. When we are alkaline we produce less lactic acid (a by-product of energy expenditure in any cell) which means our performance goes up, muscle pain post-training goes down, and the higher our fat burning capacity. This is why some people get sore after exercise and some don’t; those that don’t are more alkaline. Being in an alkaline state throughout the day increases your performance. We want to be more acidic in the evening as this acidity helps detox. (NB: The amount of acid produced when you are stressed or during training is x4000 higher than the level of acidity produced by food or coffee.)
Salt
Salt supports the adrenal system which helps regulate your hormones, mood, energy levels, and metabolism. It is important to use only raw, unrefined sea salt (The best is Celtic sea salt). Never use table salt or Himalayan salt as these salts can increase your blood pressure.
Sea Salt also contains magnesium and potassium which also helps with alkalinity. But that’s not all because raw sea salt also contains over 80+ minerals that are needed for optimal body function. If you want to learn more about sea salt and the healing power of drinking sea salt water then I invite you to read about Rene Quinton who discovered the benefits over 100 years ago and cured thousands of people from many serious ailments. His work has been forgotten (or dare we say suppressed) but if you keep searching you will always find the truth.
Recipe:
1 glass of water (warm or room temperature), ¼ teaspoon raw sea salt, and juice of half a lemon (or lime).
Extra tip: Remember to bless your water as this has been proven to structure the molecules on a quantum level… meaning more health to you.
Will it make a huge difference to your day? Depends. Will it make a huge difference to your overall long-term health if you do it every single day? Absolutely!!! So get on it.
3 Tips To Deepen Your Yoga Practice
1 GIVE IT 10. Just 10 minutes a day on your mat or meditation cushion delivers exponential mind and body benefits. You deserve this time, and you’ll be surprised how often you’re able to find more of it.
2 KEEP TRYING. No one ever claimed yoga was easy—but often it’s the difficult stuff that’s most worth doing. So keep trying hard until the trying falls away. Soon you won’t need a block to reach the floor in Triangle Pose.
3 LET IT GO. All those conscious thoughts around to-dos, deadlines—everything else you could be doing instead of practicing—can get in the way of being fully present and carried away by your yoga. Quell what experts call “conscious striving,” and you’ll clear the path to relax into the mental state you seek.
The Breakfast Of Yogis:
The most basic tip from Ayurveda would be to eat for your dosha, or your particular body type. Here are a few basic tips that you could integrate into your breakfast plan.
Vata. The vata dosha is light and airy, and finds balance by eating warming, heavy foods such as ghee, cinnamon, and hot cereal.
Kapha. The kapha dosha is heavy and slow, and generally benefits from foods that are light and fiery. This could include chili peppers, fresh fruits, and lightly cooked vegetables.
Pitta. The pitta dosha is hot and fiery, and does best with cooling foods and spices such as cardamom, bitter foods, and fresh vegetables.
Now that you know a bit more about your dosha, you could use this knowledge to add spices or foods to the following to enhance the benefits of your breakfast.
Eggs: Eggs were one of the most popular breakfast items among yoga instructors. Eggs are a great choice because they offer a stabilizing mix of protein and fat. A 70-calorie large egg will provide about six grams of protein and five grams of fat.
Jacqueline Burge of Desk Yogi says, "I'm usually on the run in the morning to get to the office and drop the kids at school. So I have a regular morning routine and I know I need protein and a touch of caffeine to get going and have energy until lunch. I have two soft-boiled eggs and a cup of Yerba mate tea. Then I follow that up with a superfood green drink powder that I mix with a small portion of apple juice. It has an incredible mix of vitamins and minerals. A few times a week I add an arugula salad with olive oil or apple slices. I love eating clean, healthy, and simple when I am short on time."
Avocado toast: Avocado toast was another clear winner among the yoga instructors I spoke with. Salt Lake City-based yoga instructor Emily Long has also studied nutrition and worked in the culinary industry, so she knows the importance of that morning meal. She said, "My go-to breakfast is one piece of whole-wheat toast... with half of a smashed avocado and a fried egg. I make the egg with a tiny bit of unsalted butter. I top it with a pinch of salt and pepper. I love this breakfast because it's filling with healthy fats and proteins, low in simple carbs, and incredibly flavorful. It's a really quick weekday breakfast that feels like weekend brunch."
Stephannie Weikert, an instructor and certified yoga therapist of Make Peace with Stress in Baltimore, Maryland, is another fan. "I toast a high-quality piece of wheat or 9-grain bread, put ghee (clarified butter) on it, and half a sliced avocado on top of that with salt and pepper. Then I put two fried or poached eggs on top of that. It's so delicious I eat it nearly everyday!"
Yogurt Erin Motz of Bad Yogi loves a good yogurt bowl in the morning. "I eat plain yogurt with a little spoon of coconut sugar, vanilla extract, a bit of seasonal fruit (peaches are my fave), and a few spoons of low-sugar granola," she told me. "Easy, quick, and filling!" This combo provides a balance of protein, carbs, and fiber.
After a glass of lemon water with cayenne, Sherrell Moore-Tucker, a yoga instructor from Upper Marlboro, Maryland — who calls breakfast "my favorite meal of the day" — said, "I'll have some yogurt and granola, and maybe an hour later a tall green smoothie made with spinach, mangos, pineapples to keep me naturally energized and alert."
Chia pudding When she's not starting her day with raw oats from a local organic cafe, Morgan Perry, founder of Yoga Unwined in New York City, loves chia pudding. "Even though they're not massive meals, both provide me with energy for many hours without feeling heavy or groggy after eating them," she said and that's thanks to the combo of nourishing ingredients and high fiber content. She especially loves the superfood boost from ingredients like matcha (green tea powder), maca, and chia seeds, which have all been noted for their variety of health benefits.
Compounds called catechins in matcha and other green tea, for example, have been studied for their potential to boost brain function, reduce cancer risk, and enhance metabolism. Maca is a root vegetable that is usually used in powdered form. It has been touted for is potential benefit to nutritional health, sexual function, energy, and numerous health conditions. Chia seeds are packed with filling fiber and heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids.
