Candle meditation, which is also called "candle gazing," is a very peaceful and spiritual way to think about things. This is a low-tech way to calm down that works very well for people who have trouble meditating and don't want to use an app. Like other kinds of meditation, candle meditation has a lot of great benefits. Usually, when you meditate, you're supposed to concentrate and silently repeat a mantra or make up a picture in your head. But with candle meditation, you just look at the flickering flame. Simple.

Many of the advantages of other mindful practices are also true with a candle meditation. There are so many advantages for body, mind, and spirit in taking time out of your day to quiet those racing thoughts and concentrate on a candle's tranquil light.

It has been shown that candle gazing can both increase our capacity for concentration and lower our levels of tension and anxiety. Over time, meditation can make us more resilient, patient, and focused in our daily lives. It can even help to aid in restful sleep.

Tips

The optimal conditions for candle meditation are complete darkness or a room with closed curtains and no artificial lighting. Place the candle in an area where there is minimal to no wind if possible since you want a soft flicker. Place your candle at eye level approximately a meter in front of you.

Depending on the aromas you select, scent has a strong tendency to influence your practice.

When you need to flow toward a personal or creative goal, Bhastrika (Bellows Breath) can help clear the mind. Sit comfortably on a chair, or cross-legged on the floor or on a cushion. Place your palms on your navel. Close your eyes and breathe in deeply then out fully, feeling the breath move. On the next inhalation through the nose, stop the breath halfway and exhale sharply, drawing your navel to your spine. Repeat 27 times—short inhalations halfway into the belly and forceful exhalations quickly pulling your navel to the spine. When you’ve finished, slow down the breath gradually until you exhale completely. Breathe in and out fully and comfortably, noticing heat in the body. Repeat 1–2 more times.

When you practice this pose, it keeps your mind calm, improves concentration, and makes your body as strong as the "Vajra." To begin, get down on the floor on your knee. Get your knees, toes, and ankles to touch the ground and align with each other. Rest your buttocks on your heels as they touch. Now, rest your hands on your knees. Get your back straight. Close your eyes, look straight in front of you, and then take a deep breath and relax.
