TODAY'S LEARNINGCHAKRAS & PRANA

Prana comes into the body through the food we eat, the air we breathe, and by receiving the energy of the land and the sky. Prana gets to every cell in the body through nadis, which are tiny pathways. The ida, pingala, and sushumna are the three main nadis in the body. They all start at the base of the spine and go up to the head. The ida and pingala nadis curve up and cross each other as they go to different airways. The sushumna, on the other hand, goes straight up the spine to the top of the head. Where the ida and pingala cross each other and meet the sushumna is where the chakras are. The chakras are connected to the thousands of smaller nadis. Because of this, they are in charge of how prana flows through the whole body.

Most of the time, locks above each chakra stop prana from moving through the sushumna. The main job of these locks is to stop the flow and activation of kundalini from going up the sushumna and into the head chakra.

Beginners and intermediate yoga students don't need to know everything there is to know about the different kinds of prana and how it shows up, but more advanced students will find this information useful. The most important thing to know is that prana is generally used as a general term for the body's main energy, which can be broken down into many different types of energy.

  • Prana can be broken up into smaller parts of energy called Vayus. (winds). The energies of these five Vayus are very subtle, but they each have their own purposes and paths of flow. Prana-Vayu, Apana-Vayu, Samana-Vayu, Udana-Vayu, and Vyana-Vayu are the five currents of life force.

  • Kundalini is the spiritual force that is sleeping at the base of the spine. Kundalini is a source of energy that is dormant until strong yoga practices wake it up. Kundalini is thought to be a kind of shakti energy.

  • Shakti is a form of cosmic energy that is more dense and has a bigger effect on our bodies and the world around us. Shiva, the energy of universal awareness, is the power that goes with Shakti.

INCREASING PRANA

Hatha yoga was made to move, grow, and control prana, as well as to wake up kundalini and send it up the sushumna nadi to the head chakra. Asana brings energy into the body, moves it around, and improves the nadis. Pranayama is the use of different breathing methods to control the vital energy, grow it, and clean the nadis. Bandhas are energy locks that keep prana in the body and focus it in the three main nadis. Mudras control prana and send it to the chakras. They also wake up the kundalini shakti. Hatha yoga tries to free the mind and expand awareness by growing prana and kundalini, managing them, and getting them to work.

FOOD FOR THE SOULAyurveda Spring Recipes: Kitachari Cleansing Dish

Ayurveda's signature healing recipe is a simple yet dynamic bean and rice mixture called kitchari. Kitchari is a cleansing yet heart warming synergy of mung beans, basmati rice, and digestive spices. It is a complete protein, rich in fiber, cleansing to the digestive tract, and will act to bulk up stools for easier elimination, making it a great healing meal for a Vata imbalance! Those who avoid beans because of digestive difficulties need not avoid kitchari. Mung beans are among the easiest to digest legumes. They are natural antacid, helping to soothe fiery digestive conditions, and won't promote gas and bloating.

Ingredients

1/4 tsp AJWAIN

1 c BASMATI RICE

1 tsp CUMIN

2 tbsp GHEE

1-inch GINGER (FRESH)

1/4 tsp HING (ASAFOETIDA)

1/2 c MUNG BEAN

1 tsp MUSTARD SEED

1/2 tsp SALT (MINERAL SALT)

1/2 tsp TURMERIC

4 c WATER

Instructions

Optional: Add 1 tbsp jaggery (raw sugar).

1. Use split mung bean if possible.

2. Soak the mung beans for several hours before cooking and drain.

3. Bring the mung beans and 4 cups of water to a boil, scooping off any foam that forms on the top. Then, strain out the liquid, and add another 4c to the mung dal.

4. Meanwhile mash the ginger with a mortar and pestle, or slice thinly. Set the mustard seed aside. Mix the remaining spices together with 1 tsp water, making a paste.

5. Fry the mustard seeds in ghee until they begin to pop.

6. Add the spice paste, spreading it in the pan, and fry for thirty seconds.

7. Add the spices to mung bean. Take some of the broth and wash any remaining spices from the frying pan into the simmering mung bean.

8. After an hour, or when mung beans begin to soften add white basmati rice and another cup of water. If you are going to use brown rice, be sure to add an extra cup of water and cook for longer - until the rice is soft.

9. Cook until tender on low heat for 20-25 minutes.
