TODAY'S LEARNING
Change negatives to positives

This may take some time because life can put pressure on our brains and trigger them to think negatively, but practicing positive thinking can reinforce new and healthier thoughts. But it might not be easy to adopt a positive outlook, particularly if we've self-sabotaged in the past. Everybody's road towards mental health is unique.

If you think that engaging in positive thinking isn't helping, you might be overthinking the situation. There may be moments when your mind races, particularly if you experience anxiety frequently. However, what important is the voice inside of you that tells you change is possible.

Each day, I tell myself what I’m going to do, such as finishing my schoolwork, doing chores, cooking a meal, writing a poem, reading a book, spending time with loved ones and so on. While I’m telling myself these things, I’ll have many thoughts race into my brain, but these thoughts don’t define me. Who I truly am is revealed by the stories I tell myself.

Mental illness is challenging, and it can deceive us. For people who have depression like I do, thoughts can be a bother. But if we make specific promises to ourselves about what we're going to do, say, and how we're going to listen, we'll discover that life is more than just gloomy ideas. That's positivity, and we may transform those negative thoughts into good ones by telling ourselves better things. Reciting affirmations that are uplifting, like "I'm kind," is another technique to think more optimistically. I deserve it. I'm capable of doing this.

Eventually, we'll get so accustomed to telling ourselves what we need or want that our negative ideas start to fade away. Instead, while we're focused on following our passions, being responsible, caring for others, and pursuing our aspirations, optimistic thoughts will begin to emerge.

My depression tends to motivate me because it makes me work twice as hard than is usually necessary to stay healthy. I now understand how crucial it is to take care of oneself and have encouraging conversations with yourself if you want to go in a better and healthier path in life. Recall, diseases are treatable and we are capable of healing.

We may make a strategy to work toward that objective if we can identify the factors that have contributed to our depression and what we need to do to lessen it. If we’re still figuring it out, that’s OK, because mental health is a work in progress. Being depressed does not define you, nor does it preclude you from finding happiness. It just makes you a person who has been motivated to learn more about mental health, not a miserable person.

My doctors and therapists have taught me that people with depression frequently have a chemical imbalance in their brains. This is what sets off frustration and pessimistic thinking. Although these items don't truly capture who we are, having depression does require us to work hard to regain our mental health. If engaging in physical exercise aids in that, then by all means! But remember, the brain requires exercise just as much as the body does. It will be simpler to stay positive the more the brain is trained to be positive.

ZEN STORY
EGO

The Prime Minister of the Tang Dynasty was a national hero for his success as both a statesman and military leader. But despite his fame, power, and wealth, he considered himself a humble and devout Buddhist. Often he visited his favorite Zen master to study under him, and they seemed to get along very well. The fact that he was prime minister apparently had no effect on their relationship, which seemed to be simply one of a revered master and respectful student.

One day, during his usual visit, the Prime Minister asked the master, "Your Reverence, what is egotism according to Buddhism?" The master's face turned red, and in a very condescending and insulting tone of voice, he shot back, "What kind of stupid question is that!?"

This unexpected response so shocked the Prime Minister that he became sullen and angry. The Zen master then smiled and said, "THIS, Your Excellency, is egotism."
