The Weekend Positive News Roundup:1. Small Gecko Makes A Comeback...

Conservationists in St. Vincent and the Grenadines have successfully preserved a Critically Endangered gecko that is only a little larger than a paperclip.

The population of the Union Island gecko, which is distinguished by jewel-like markings on its hide, has nearly doubled in just four years, going from 10,000 to 18,000 individuals.

When the small gecko was found in 2005 in a 123-acre patch of undeveloped jungle on Union Island, it immediately attracted the attention of illicit pet traffickers. It was believed that the animal will completely vanish by 2017.

Conservation groups Fauna & Flora International, Re: Wild, and Union Island Environmental Alliance worked together with the country’s forestry department to develop a strategy to save the gecko utilizing camera surveillance and anti-poaching patrols.

2. Floating Solar Parks

Offshore wind has been the go-to for renewable power generation in Northern climates for years. Floating solar is now considered to be the next big thing in energy production and will complement existing installations.

One company that is believed to be the current frontrunner in the race for the world’s largest hybrid offshore floating solar plant is SolarDuck. The company is gearing up to join a massive wind farm off the coast of the Netherlands later this year.

SolarDuck has teamed up with RWE to build the world’s first 5MW demonstration floating PV project with integrated energy storage at the 760MW Hollandse Kust West wind farm and received clearance from the Dutch government as the winner of its latest national tender for wind farms. The project is working on an aggressive timeline and will be operational by 2026.

The SolarDuck system formed a part of the RWE bid, and the Dutch-Norwegian company is now ready to proceed with the North Sea project that it called “a flagship project for SolarDuck” and “an important milestone for the wider offshore floating solar industry.”

3. Cute Comes in All Shapes and Sizes

Mohu is a spherical Toy Poodle and has nearly 100,000 followers on Instagram all of whom are obsessed with her unexplainably round shape.

The six-year-old from Osaka, Japan, has become such an internet sensation after her owner started sharing pictures of her online, and the enamored following could not get over the roundness of her coat.

4. Over a million dollars are donated annually to the city's poor from the pennies thrown into Rome's Trevi Fountain.

Every year, more than €1 million in coins thrown into the Trevi Fountain in Rome are hoovered up to feed, clothe, and house the city’s poor.

Completed in 1762, the marble marvel is one of the Eternal City’s most popular attractions. Commissioned in the 1730s by Nicola Salvi, it depicts the taming of waters.

Oceanus the sea god is pulled by a shell chariot of seahorses, all around which lie shells, coral, fishes, and other sea things.

Tradition has it that tourists put their back to the fountain and toss a coin over their left shoulder with their right hand—an act that supposedly guarantees they shall return to the Eternal City.

Caritas, a charity managed by the Catholic church, receives this massive windfall, for which they fund soup kitchens, homeless shelters, free supermarkets, and other projects.
