Cleanse The Ayurvedic Way
The Ayurvedic cleanse is a powerful draw for a variety of reasons. This cleanse, often referred to in its complete format as panchakarma, nourishes rather than deprives. It is balancing to all constitutions, or doshas, and is low-cost, making it accessible to all. Furthermore, it focuses on healing and replenishing both the body and mind, which Deepak Chopra refers to as one and the same—the body-mind.

When to Cleanse
Anytime you encounter excess ama, or the toxic byproducts of unprocessed food, emotions, and experiences, an Ayurvedic cleansing, or detoxification, can be carried out. The following are signs of excessive ama:
Fatigue / Irritability
Discomfort or stiffness in the body
Unwanted weight gain or a failure to shed too much weight
cravings, particularly for processed carbs or sugar
Candida
Skin issues including acne, redness, or dry skin
When you first wake up in the morning, your tongue may have a white coating.
Ayurvedic cleanses are traditionally carried out three times a year. Their timing coincides with the seasonal transition. Based on the three seasons' fundamental doshic characteristics, according to Ayurveda:
Spring
2. Summer/early fall
3. Late fall/winter
A cleansing detox can be done at the start of the season or whenever you are feeling rundown.
Cleansing in Ayurveda: Three Stages
An Ayurvedic professional will personalize bodily treatments for the patient throughout the typical Ayurvedic cleanse, or panchakarma, which lasts for three to four weeks. You can, however, carry out your own, more standard Ayurvedic detox at home. You can alter the length of the whole panchakarma cleanse to fit your needs; it normally lasts three to four weeks. As each of the three phases is essential to the overall cleansing, try to keep their durations consistent. Your cleansing, for instance, could last six days (two days in each phase), twelve days (four days in each), or twenty-one days (seven days in each).
Phase 1: Planning
The first stage focuses on cleansing the food and hydration to prepare the intestines. Here, a clean diet is one that promotes little stomach waste. You should concentrate on warm, basic foods during the first week and stay away from the following:
Meat, including fish (eggs are okay)
Dairy
Processed, packaged, or manufactured foods
Sugar
Beans
Caffeine
Alcohol
During this time, you should also try to include a lot of green vegetables, leafy greens, and beets in your diet as they are all cleansing for the gut and lymph (see the hydration section below for much more on lymph fluid).
Sample Week 1 Menu Options
Breakfast:
Warm oats prepared with cinnamon and diced apples
Warm oatmeal with ghee, salt, and wilted microgreens for savory oats.
Dinner or lunch:
Small bowl of rice and a vegetable soup and salad with shredded beets on top.
Rice and cooked greens are paired with a red or green vegetable curry.
Roasted veggies and tahini sauce on top of quinoa
Squash that has been hollowed out and filled with seasoned rice and vegetables is known as a stuffed squash.
Hydration
During this stage of preparation, hydration is a major concern that will continue throughout the following phases. By drinking plenty of water, you may guarantee that your digestive system is properly lubricated and that the lymph fluid is suitably thinned. The body's immune fluid is called lymph fluid. It only moves through channels when you move or manipulate it physically (think massaging or stretching). White blood cells are present in the lymph fluid. These cells protect the body from foreign intruders like bacteria and altered cells (such as pre-cancerous cells). These cells are swept up by the lymph fluid and held in "holding chambers" called lymph nodes until they can be removed. Dehydration, which makes the lymph fluid thick and sticky, is one factor that might affect the health of the lymphatic system.
Beyond immunity, lymph fluid is crucial for a healthy digestive system. A coating of lymph fluid covers the gut, aiding in the destruction of any pathogenic intruders that slip through the gut lining during digestion. Once more, clogged lymph fluid is unable to perform this function effectively, which might lead to accumulating ama. Make sure your lymph fluid is well-prepared for stage 2 by eating healthfully, munching on beets and tart apples, and drinking plenty of water. Focus, hydration, and a healthy digestive system can all be achieved at once with ginger tea.
Cleanse in Phase 2 (The Kitchari Stage)
It's time to start adjusting your digestive fire, or Agni, now that your gut has had a break from constricting meals and your lymph has thinned. You will concentrate on a particular form of clean eating during this phase, a healthy combination of kitchari meals and ghee oleation, in various traditional settings. In Ayurveda, the term "oleation" is used to describe the process of consuming beneficial oils.
Why is kitcha? Indian cuisine staple kitchari is made with basmati rice, split mung dahl beans, ghee, and seasonings. Given that it has all the necessary macronutrients—carbohydrate (beans and grains), complete protein (mung dahl), and fat—kitchari is known as the "ideal meal" (ghee).
Why is ghee? Butyric acid, a metabolic byproduct created in the gut that aids in maintaining a healthy intestinal wall, is present in ghee. Omega-3 fatty acids, fat-soluble vitamins, and short-, medium-, and long-chain fatty acids are all abundant in ghee. Ghee aids in regularity and absorption by lubricating and softening the interior of the digestive tract. A long-held belief that eating ghee aids in the binding and removal of fat-soluble toxins from the body is supported by research.
Daily Menu: Ghee + Kitchari
This is where the Ayurvedic cleansing makes a lot of people take notice. In actuality, this phase is not as challenging as it may seem. In contrast to the processed or low-fat meals found in the normal American diet, phase two can feel fulfilling and pleasant.
Morning ghee: You can either drink your recommended daily amount of ghee in the morning and then keep it out of your kitchari for the remainder of the day, which is the preferred option, or you can forgo the morning ritual and instead add ghee to your kitchari when you eat.
Ghee for the morning: If you choose for the former, you will begin phase 2 of each day by consuming ghee on an empty stomach. The amount? Generally speaking, it is best to start with one tablespoon of melted ghee and add another tablespoon for every two days that you remain in phase 2. During phase 2's seven-day duration, you should consume one tablespoon of ghee on days one and two, two tablespoons on days three and four, three tablespoons on days five and six, and four tablespoons on day seven.
Regarding "integrated" ghee: Instead of performing the aforementioned step, cook your three daily kitchari meals with the ghee specified in the recipe.
Kitchari dishes Kitchari will make up all of your meals for the day. Try to eat three meals each day with little between-meal snacking. It's crucial to eat during mealtimes until you're entirely satisfied if you want to achieve this. Cut back on your carb intake now, but don't concentrate on starving yourself! You can reduce between-meal munching if you eat until you are completely satisfied. Several kitchari recipes may be found online with split mung dahl beans, basmati rice, water, and Indian seasonings as the main ingredients. If using the "morning ghee" approach, the ghee can be left out; if using the second way, it must be added to the recipe.
Self-Care
Phase 2 of self-care focuses on digestion, which involves both the digestion of experiences and meals. Your internal emotional distress can accrue karma that is just as detrimental to your health and well-being as a poor diet. Your body will likely bring up some buried feelings as it goes through its own healing process. This is advantageous! The ability to direct love and acceptance toward your accumulated traumas from the past will help you release them when you are ready. This phase will benefit from daily self-care rituals and wellness practices. The list of potential daily self-care rituals is provided below. Select a few or one:
Abhyanga: Use heated oil to massage yourself or have someone else do it for you. Use almond or sesame oil to balance vata. Use olive or coconut oil to balance Pitta. Use safflower or sunflower oils to balance the Kapha dosha. In the shower, the massage can be performed. However, doing it outside of the shower is very nutritious because you can let the oil sit on and truly penetrate your skin.
Use the Neti Pot every day to clear your nasal passageways by following these instructions.
Nasya: Sesame oil is not only for the outside! Hydrate your sinuses by placing sesame oil into a dropper and dropping two to three drops into each nostril with the head tilted back. Allow the head to remain tilted back for a few seconds, sniffing to allow the oil to penetrate.
Brushing your skin: The skin is encased in a layer of lymphatic fluid, just like the stomach. Dry skin brushing might help to get the fluid circulating. Your skin should be brushed in the direction of your heart using a brush with strong bristles.
Exercise: It's best to take it easy on your body during cleanses. While detoxifying, incorporate simple yoga and strolls into your regular schedule.
Meditation: Create an area where you can meditate every day. Do not be afraid if you do not already incorporate this into your regular routine. Simply set out five minutes each day to sit comfortably (on the couch works well), close your eyes, and concentrate on your breathing. This matters! In this, we meditate!
Self-reflection: After meditation, when the subconscious mind opens up and displays its inner workings, self-reflection frequently yields the best results. Self-reflection can occur both internally, such as when one is simply sitting motionless and thinking things through, as well as externally, such as when one is writing or speaking with a qualified therapist.
Not sure what to consider? Try this easy trick: visualize yourself as a little child, around the age of six or seven. What do you fear the most at that age? Put yourself back in your own shoes from when you were a child, and experience the physical sensation of that dread. Turn your focus to your adult self after a brief interval. Do you ever feel the same level of fear in life? Consider these connections. Both the adorable kid you and the grown-up, adult version of you are in need of love, acceptance, and healing.
A Note on Healing
During the first and second phases, any of the following signs of healing could manifest:
Nausea
Headache
Fatigue
Irritability
Low mood/tearfulness
Although these symptoms are challenging to manage, they are indicators that internal transformation is taking place. Make sure to keep drinking water to provide your body a way to get rid of the "bad." Observe how often you go to the bathroom. You need to go to the bathroom at least once every day, ideally twice or three times. If your "output" is slow, try drinking more water and perhaps think about taking a psyllium husk supplement every day to keep things moving. Senna, a milk laxative tea, may also be helpful, but this should only be done if fiber and water have failed to produce results.
Third Stage: Rejuvenate
Phase three is similar to phase one in that it emphasizes clean meals and continued hydration. You could feel tempted to overindulge during this stage as you are relieved to be returning to the world of diverse foods. Foods should be reintroduced gradually, maybe starting with steamed vegetables for the first few days before moving on to eggs or beans later in the week. During this period, continue to stay away from coffee, alcohol, meat, and sweets as your body may be sensitive to these foods.

Build it and they will come. That old adage certainly seems to be true of Switzerland’s ponds, which are attracting endangered amphibians — and boosting their numbers.
Hundreds of ponds have been dug in the Aargau canton over the last 20 years. That work appears to be paying off after a study revealed that frogs and newts are bouncing back in the region. Of eight endangered species identified, 52 percent increased their regional populations and 32 percent were stabilized.
“Our analysis shows that the large-scale construction of hundreds of new ponds in northern Switzerland has halted, or even reversed declining trends for the majority of amphibian species, including multiple red-listed species undergoing declines at the national level,” the study concluded.
