TODAY'S LEARNINGThe Three Gunas

Ayurveda, which comes from the eastern Samkhya philosophy, says that everything in the universe has three basic natural qualities that make us who we are. The balance of these qualities also affects how we think and act, as well as our relationships, physical health, and state of mind. The gunas are not things. Instead, they are subtle qualities that affect how we live. The balance of these qualities, called gunas, determines how happy we can be in our daily lives, including at work.

Let's go over these ideas, called gunas:

Sattva

This is what it means to be clear, light, pure, calm, and satisfied. Anything that possesses these characteristics will elevate our sattva. This may apply to things like meals, ideas, or hobbies. When we practice sattva in our life, we experience joy, tranquility, creativity, fulfillment, and inspiration. Things that boost sattva include:

Fresh, unprocessed foods including fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes.Places that are clean, organized, and relaxing.

Spending time outside, gardening, or doing light exercise.

Reading inspirational or spiritual works.

Meditation and doing good for other people.

Rajas This is an active, moving, stimulating, energizing, and passionate experience. Rajas in excess may make us agitated, greedy, worried, and aggressive. The rajas within us will grow as a result of anything that enhances these attributes. Some of these items are as follows:

Overly spicy or salty foods, sugar, and caffeine.

Surroundings that are loud, disorderly, and chaotic.

Excessive activity, vigorous exercise, or travel.

Wiewing shocking news or frantic, action-packed movies.

TamasThis is the feeling of drowsiness, inertia, inactivity, sluggishness, and lethargy.  Too much tamas makes us feel indifferent, depressed, bored, and uninspired. Things like:

  • Processed foods, refined flour, and sugar, meat, alcohol.

  • Cluttered, unclean surroundings.

  • Internet browsing and other forms of idle entertainment are overdone.

  • Watching films with a lot of violence.

All of the gunas play a role in our life, as there are times when we need rajas to engage in activity and movement. We occasionally require tamas in order to unwind, relax, and sleep. We should try to avoid doing activities that boost rajas and tamas. Overall, these gunas must be maintained in harmony for sattva to rule our life.

WEEKLY ASTROLOGY

The Sun enters Pisces on February 18, 2023, marking a fresh energy shift as it leaves Aquarius. This is the moment when the Pisces energy within us emerges and pervades our existence, molding our perception of the world and our sense of self.

Pisces, a water sign, has a connection to the ethereal, spiritual, and mystic worlds. It belongs to the imaginative and intuitive. It is the speck of energy trapped by the harmonic river of existence, the drop of water that cannot be detached from the vast ocean.   It symbolizes the last voyage of the astrological year before the Sun enters Aries, the first sign of the zodiac, on March 21, 2023, and starts a new cycle.

The invitation for this week and the whole Pisces season is to remove any obstacles in your path to living. After much of the world has taught us to desensitize, this week marks the beginning of a month-long journey into re-sensitizing ourselves. It's time to let love, beauty, art, music, healing, energy, prayer, forgiving, and receptivity into your heart. It is a lens through which we are encouraged to view and to keep in mind that being open is necessary in order to live completely.

POSITIVE NEWS OF THE DAY

The International Energy Agency (IEA) predicted this week that by the middle of the decade, renewable energy sources will dominate the world's electrical supply.

The most recent IEA Power Market Report demonstrates how the demand for electricity is anticipated to increase until 2025.

“The good news is that renewables and nuclear power are growing quickly enough to meet almost all this additional appetite, suggesting we are close to a tipping point for power sector emissions,” said IEA executive director Fatih Birol.

Within three years, according to Carbon Brief's analysis of the IEA's statistics, renewable energy sources will surpass coal-fired electricity generation, which is presently in the lead.

MANTRA OF THE WEEKOng Namo Guru Dev Namo

"I bow to the Creative Wisdom. I bow to the Divine Teacher Within."

Known as the Adi Mantra, this Gurmukhi mantra is traditionally sung or chanted to invoke divine wisdom before a Kundalini Yoga practice. It is commonly translated in English as I bow to the Creative Wisdom, I bow to the Divine Teacher within. This mantra was important in the teachings of Yogi Bhajan, an Indian spiritual teacher who brought the practice of Kundalini Yoga to the West. It is used to tune in to the self-knowledge within. You can also use this mantra when you feel confused or alone and want to connect to the infinite wisdom of your true self or spirit.
