TODAY'S LEARNING
Empowering Yourself- Using Shadow Work To Reclaim Our Power
What is the shadow:
The shadow is a critical psychological insight from the work of psychiatrist Carl Jung.
The shadow is the “dark side” of our personality because it consists chiefly of primitive, negative human emotions and impulses like rage, envy, greed, selfishness, desire, and the striving for power.
Everything we deny in ourselves—whatever we perceive as inferior, evil, or unacceptable—becomes part of the shadow.
Anything incompatible with our chosen conscious attitude about ourselves relegates to this dark side.
Exercises and prompts for getting started with shadow work
1. Think about someone who triggers you
One way in which the shadow shows up for us is in what we find most distasteful or difficult in others. Often these images are a reflection of parts of ourselves that we find unlikable.
Therefore, a good place to start with shadow work would be to consider someone who irritates you and consider what qualities of that person might possibly exist within you. asking to yourself some mild questions to help you sort this out, like:
What is it about this person that I don't like?
Do I find that I have some of those same traits sometimes?
What makes it so difficult to be around them?
What parts of me does that person enliven when I'm around them? And how do I feel about that part of myself?
2. Look over your family tree
Analyzing your family tree is another introductory practice that helps you get started with shadow work.
Make a family tree of your two sets of grandparents, all of your aunts and uncles, and your parents because they're the generations above you whose attributes—good and bad—might be in you. Getting honest enough to declare, "I love my family, but one of my uncles drinks too much," is the main goal of this approach.
The next stage is to examine all those traits that run in your family and determine which ones you share.
3. Face your shadow
Facing your own shadow through meditation is another activity. Once you've got a clear (or at least somewhat clear) view of the aspects of your shadow self, you can begin the work of confronting and releasing them with positive affirmations such as:
I allow the darkest shadow that's buried within me to be released.
I release fear; I release doubt; I release shame; I release insecurity.

FOOD FOR THE SOUL
Ayurveda Recipes: Beet Cleanse Soup (Borscht)
This recipe pairs winter root vegetables like potatoes and beets with the cleansing spring flavors of dill and vinegar, helping your body transition into spring. Beets and vinegar are a perfect addition to an early spring diet. They offer a healthy remedy to a congested spring blood and liver. As they stimulate the gall bladder to release bile, they flush out burdensome fats and toxins leftover from holiday celebrations, reducing triglyceride levels. Bile is also a major pathway of cholesterol metabolism. The mild laxative qualities of beets and vinegar help flush the digestive tract as well. The beta-carotene in beets is an excellent liver tonic.
Ingredients
3 tbsp APPLE CIDER VINEGAR
2 c BEETS
1/4 tsp BLACK PEPPER
2 c CABBAGE
4 whole CARROT
3/4 c DILL
1 whole POTATO
1/4 tsp SALT (MINERAL SALT)
2 tbsp SUNFLOWER OIL
1/2 c YELLOW ONION
Instructions
Chop onions. Slice potato, carrots, beets and cabbage thinly. Place all ingredients in a pot and cover twice the height with water. Bring to a boil and simmer, covered, for one hour of more.
Variations include garlic and parsley.
