TODAY'S LEARNING
Finding Joy In The Little Things

Have you ever wondered why certain people appear cheerful practically all the time, regardless of their circumstances? They appear to have a grace and thankfulness about life that many of us don't comprehend, even when challenges arise. They have learnt to appreciate life's small pleasures, which is one of the reasons they are able to weather difficult times with such gratitude. And this, in my opinion, is the secret of happiness.

Get outside and listen

Go outside and listen. Each and every day, even for a short while (5–10 minutes). You can enjoy your morning smoothie, tea, or coffee while sitting outside. Alternatively, take a little stroll around your area. Open a window if you are having trouble going outside. Just remember to utilize that time to pay attention to the sounds surrounding you. That also works if you live in a busy metropolis. Pay attention to the giggling and chatting of those in the area. Take energy from them.

You will become more aware of your surroundings and able to step outside of yourself with the aid of this practice.

Slow down

Stop rushing through life and looking forward to the next thing. You lose sight of the now when you are preoccupied with the future. And how to enjoy it. So, think upon the here and now as much as you can.

At initially, you might need to remind yourself to do this. To get started, schedule time each day (at least 2-3 times a day) to stop and ask yourself what you’re noticing in the moment. Put it on your calendar and set an alarm if necessary.

Take note of everything as you pause to observe what is happening. Make use of every sense. What can you taste, feel, hear, or see? Give them some thought for a minute, allowing yourself to experience any feelings that arise.

This practice will help you center into your feelings and bring you a new awareness of the present. An awareness that’s necessary to notice the “little” things around you.

Schedule time with yourself

Schedule time to be alone with your thoughts at least once per day. This doesn't require a lot of time to complete. Start with five or ten minutes. Additionally, you can mix this with your outside time, provided that it is reasonably calm and quiet. Spend some time in silence during these moments, letting your ideas come to you.

As long as you follow this every day, you don't need to create a rigorous plan. I do this at different times of the day. Sometimes I do this first thing in the morning, sometimes in the middle of the day when I need a break, and sometimes at night before going to bed.

Spending time by yourself will assist you in identifying and resolving any concerns or difficulties that are bothering you. It enables you to free up mental clutter and become more acutely aware of your surroundings. This will also assist you in slowing down. You can use it as a means of making yourself slow down when you're feeling stressed.

Be grateful for something every day

Write down or declare out loud something for which you are thankful every day. without making any duplicates. You will begin to realize how many "little" things there are in life for which to express gratitude when you push yourself to try something new. Items that are happy, peaceful, and joyful.

Completing the aforementioned tasks will awaken your senses to the beauty that surrounds you every day. And awareness is key. If you never notice the small things, it's difficult to be grateful for them. I promise you that, if you do the above, you’ll start to notice things that you were previously tuning out.

TODAY'S POSITIVE NEWS

Zero Airline Crashes in 2023: It Was One of Aviation’s Safest Years Ever

It simply doesn’t get enough publicity, considering the fact that modern aviation has reached a point where tens of thousands of giant metal tubes filled with the most flammable liquid can launch themselves into the air at hundreds of miles per hour every day and almost nothing ever goes wrong.

With no huge, turbofan-powered jet aircraft involved in anything like an accident anywhere on Earth in 2023, it was the safest year in aviation history. That means that the scenario that was just described occurred tens of thousands of times a day for 365 days without a single deadly crash or collision.

Even the chance of death while flying is decreasing to a percentage point, with only two fatalities originating from equipment or technical issues.

ZEN STORY
POINTING FINGER

The Zen teacher’s dog loved his evening romp with his master. The dog would bound ahead to fetch a stick, then run back, wag his tail, and wait for the next game. On this particular evening, the teacher invited one of his brightest students to join him – a boy so intelligent that he became troubled by the contradictions in Buddhist doctrine.

“You must understand,” said the teacher, “that words are only guideposts. Never let the words or symbols get in the way of truth. Here, I’ll show you.”

With that the teacher called his happy dog.

“Fetch me the moon,” he said to his dog and pointed to the full moon.

“Where is my dog looking?” asked the teacher of the bright pupil.

“He’s looking at your finger.”

“Exactly. Don’t be like my dog. Don’t confuse the pointing finger with the thing that is being pointed at. All our Buddhist words are only guideposts. Every man fights his way through other men’s words to find his own truth.”
