Revolutionary Antidote Neutralizes Venom of 19 of World’s Deadliest Snakes–Thanks to Man Who Immunized Himself

Researchers have developed a revolutionary new antidote that can neutralize the venom of 19 of the world's deadliest snakes, including black mambas, king cobras, and tiger snakes. This breakthrough was made possible by using antibodies from a human donor named Tim Friede, who had developed "hyper-immunity" to snake venom through self-immunization over 18 years. The researchers created a three-part cocktail consisting of two antibodies isolated from Friede's blood and a small molecule called varespladib, which together provided complete protection against 13 of the 19 deadly snake species tested and partial protection for the remaining species.

Traditional antivenom production has changed little in the past century, typically involving immunizing horses or sheep with venom from single snake species, resulting in region-specific treatments that can cause adverse reactions. This new approach could lead to a universal antiserum that works against multiple snake species. The research team is now planning to test the antivenom's efficacy in the field, starting with treating snake-bitten dogs in Australian veterinary clinics, while also developing a complementary antivenom targeting the viper snake family to address the more than one million snake bites that occur worldwide annually.
