Herbal Healing

Herbs and spices, which come from plants, have a wide range of healing properties. By learning some basic information about how herbology works from an Ayurvedic point of view, one can learn more about this ancient healing system.

Most of the time, ayurvedic herbs can be put into the following groups:

Rasa means taste, juice, plasma, or essence. According to Ayurveda, there are six tastes: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent, and astringent. Taste is determined by the pañca-mahā-bhūta, or elements present within the substance. Medicine falls into one of two main groups: those that build or those that clean. The heavy tastes are sweet, sour, and salty. These tastes are called brmhanab, which means they build tissue and make you feel better. Bitter, pungent, and astringent are the light tastes that are considered laṅgana , or catabolic and cleansing in nature. Western diets often don't have enough of the ladder three tastes. Because of this, bitter, pungent, and astringent herbs are often used in strong medicines because they clean the body of toxins. When anabolic, or building, treatment is needed, sweet, sour, and salty tastes can be used to feed the tissues. Whether something is cooked or raw, ripe or unripe, dry or fresh, etc., can change its rasa.

Vīrya is the energetic effect of a herb. Vīrya can either warm up or cool down. A heating Vīrya will improve blood flow and metabolism, which will make Vata and Kapha doshas lessen. Pitta dosha will benefit from a cooling Vīrya because it will calm, soothe, and moisten the channels.

Vipāka is the effect that a herb has on the body after it has been digested, or how it affects the tissues. This is how a herb affects the body over time (in contrast to rasa, which has an immediate effect). There are three kinds of Vipāka: those that are sweet, spicy, or sour. Herbs with a sweet Vipāka will feed the tissues and keep them moist. Herbs with a pungent vipāka increase dryness and lightness in the tissues. Sour Vipāka is less common, but it helps the body digest, heat up, and hold more water.

Karma is the action of an herb in the body. For example, herbs which have a dīpana action will increase appetite and digestive fire. Herbs with a pācana action will burn ama or clear toxins. Herbs classified under hṛdaya will act as a cardiac tonic.

Dhātu is the tissue that the herb is targeting. According to Ayurveda, there are seven dhatus, or tissues: lymph, blood, muscle, fat, bone, nerve, and reproductive tissue. Certain herbs may have a preference for one or more tissues. While Neem is good for the blood and fat tissues, Tulsi is good for the lymphatic tissue.

📰 Positive News Of The Day!

Scientists from Rutgers and Harvard developed a spray-on antimicrobial and biodegradable food covering that could be rinsed off with water.

The antimicrobial agents include thyme oil and citric acid.

The scientists tested the spray on avocados and found that the shelf-life was extended by 50%.

This could help replace plastic packaging.

Is it safe to use, we have no clue, but it's an interesting innovation that can be useful in the future...

Yoga Flow To Boost Vitality

This morning yoga flow can thoroughly re-energize you and manifest fresh vitality throughout the day. It tests the strength of your body as well as brings stillness to your mind.

Before you begin: Remember that yoga influences you to rediscover how to focus on your breath, which in turn nudges you to return to the present moment and your surroundings. So set an intention to reset your mind, center all of your attention on the current situation, and listen to the cues from your body.

Utkatasana (Chair)

Discover your fiery side by engaging in the challenging and strong chair yoga stance. Utkatasana is a posture that can help you live a life full of vigor, health, and strength. Standing with your feet together, take a deep breath, then raise your arms straight up in the air. Breathe out, and start to reposition your hips as you flex your knees. When your thighs are perpendicular to the ground, stop and tune into your body.

Chakravakasana (Cat cow)

Transition on all fours, placing your knees beneath your hips and your wrists beneath your shoulders. Stretch your spine and move your pelvis back as you breathe in. Stretch your neck towards the ceiling as you look up. Then, release your feet down as you pull back your hips and curl your tailbone in the cat position and exhale. This pose enhances balance and posture and extends and strengthens the neck and spine while stretching the back, stomach, and hips.

Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward Dog)

Bring your hands on the ground with your toes tucked and hips raised. Now, gradually push your heels back while allowing your tailbone to swing towards the ceiling. Adho Mukha Svanasana increases upper body strength, stretches the spine as well as enhances circulation.

Bhujangasana (Cobra)

This bending-back position expands the chest and compresses the kidneys, which is energizing in the morning. Start on your stomach with your hands by your ribs and your feet hip distance apart. To engage your quadriceps, straighten your big toes and push down with all ten toenails. Raise your chest off the ground, and inhale. Keep your low ribs on the floor and roll your shoulders back. Hold the Cobra stance for a few breaths if the day you have planned calls for imagination and self-assurance.
