TODAY'S LEARNING
Inner Healing

Trauma is the emotional reaction to a traumatic, physically or psychologically dangerous incident. Adverse life events in infancy or adulthood, abuse, relational violence, assault, loss, and other factors can all lead to trauma.

It's challenging to make sense of a horrific event and its consequences. It could seem impossible to heal. Nonetheless, there are effective treatment alternatives and trauma-informed care available to assist people in starting to heal both physically and emotionally following an incident.

Side Effects of Past Trauma

Trauma rates are comparatively high, which indicates that a large number of us have experienced damaging or dangerous circumstances.

Approximately 60% of men and 51% of women reported having experienced a traumatic event in their lifetime, according to a review of the literature on trauma. Furthermore, a lot of adults will go through several traumatic experiences.

Trauma reactions can be either short-term or long-term. Events that cause trauma can cause emotional, bodily, and social well-being to become disturbed or to diminish. Reactions to trauma can sometimes result in a post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) diagnosis.

Some instances of traumatic reactions are as follows:

  • Intrusive or repetitive memories or distressing thoughts

  • Flashbacks

  • Nightmares or trouble sleeping

  • Memory issues

  • Persistent distressing emotions, including fear, shame, rage, guilt, or shame

  • Anxiety or depression

  • Feeling on edge or easily startled

  • Irritability

  • Isolation or withdrawal from support

How to Let Go of Past Trauma

Some strategies to help improve your mental health and well-being after trauma include:

  • Stay connected to your support system

  • Find healthy activities that help with self-expression

  • Move your body in gentle ways like stretching, yoga, or walking

  • Eat balanced meals

  • Keep a regular sleep routine

  • Practice mindfulness and relaxation techniques

  • Attend a support group

  • Use stress management strategies

  • Seek help from a mental health professional

It's important to keep in mind that everyone heals from trauma differently, especially if you are helping a loved one who is recuperating. Being an attentive listener is one way to be present. Allow children to share their experiences, and when they do, listen to them with kindness, understanding, and respect. Tell them straight out how you can assist and guide them to a specialist if necessary.

Relationships

Intimacy, emotional openness, and proximity are all part of a relationship. Recurring trauma-causing events in a relationship can make recovery difficult. Setting limits for yourself, finding a safe space to heal, and establishing connections with people you can trust can all be beneficial.

Death

Losing a loved one is earth-shattering. Witnessing the death of another or sudden death can complicate the loss.

Many people will go through the stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance), but everyone's process with grief is unique. Realizing that grieving is a continuous process is one aspect of healing.

Anger

Anger is a normal feeling and frequently a sign of what our bodies or minds require. It's common to experience anger following a painful relationship or situation.

Anger is typically accompanied by other feelings. It can be an indication of something more serious. You can learn to manage this emotion by finding constructive outlets for it.

Control

Traumatic situations often involve incidents where someone didn't have control. It's possible for the worry and panic to become unbearable. To help you feel protected, it can be beneficial to concentrate on the things you can control during the healing process.

Regret

Feelings of remorse, guilt, or self-blame can result from trauma. People could experience shock, survivor's guilt, or self-blame when they consider what they could have done or altered.

POSITIVE NEWS OF THE DAY

Abandoned water wells are being rejuvenated with a dash of color in the Tamil Nadu state of India.

Here, where clean water pulled from small wells is a daily necessity in the semi-arid Virudhunagar district that is entirely irrigated by rain and not by rivers, 163 wells were targeted for the project by local administrators.

Dreamt up by the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), work commenced in August of 2022 and was finished by December. Whimsical designs like a treasure chest, cup and saucer, a wrapped present, and watermelon were chosen for the wells’ structures and shelters in order to raise awareness and enthusiasm for water conservation.
