TODAY'S LEARNING
Lessons In Gratitude

1. Gratitude can help you notice the positive in life

It’s easy to focus on the negatives, but when you practice gratitude, you’re better able to appreciate the good stuff around you, no matter how frustrating your day has been. Perhaps a lovely sunset or a friend's encouraging comments are helping you to see the positive aspects of life. You'll notice happy moments more frequently when you make an effort to be grateful.

2. Gratitude reminds us what’s important

Sometimes, with everything going on around us, we lose sight of what actually important. Having gratitude serves as a kind reminder to cherish our relationships, our health, and even the little things in life, like a delicious meal.

3. Gratitude encourages you to live in the present moment

Gratitude helps to keep you rooted in the here and now. When you are thankful, you are sincerely appreciating what is happening right now rather than dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. Savoring a warm cup of coffee or losing yourself in a friend's tale without worrying about your next move is what it means to be present.

4. Gratitude reduces comparison

Living a life of gratitude helps lessen the urge to compare yourself to others constantly. You won't feel the urge to have what other people have when you're content with what you already have. Reducing negative self-talk and boosting self-esteem are two benefits of this technique.

5. Gratitude can boost your mood

Recall an instance where you were appreciated. That was pleasant, wasn't it? Experiencing and expressing thankfulness in your day-to-day life lifts your spirits. As happy feelings blossom, you soon find yourself spreading your joy to everyone around you.

6. Gratitude helps to strengthen relationships

Giving thanks to others isn't only about you. It fortifies relationships when you convey it to other people. Perhaps it's expressing gratitude to a friend for their presence or acknowledging a family member's work in preparing dinner. Expressing gratitude is an easy approach to strengthen relationships.

ZEN STORY
The Thief Who Became a Disciple

One evening as Shichiri Kojun was reciting sutras a thief with a sharp sword entered, demanding either money or his life. Shichiri told him: “Do not disturb me. You can find the money in that drawer.” Then he resumed his recitation. A little while afterwards he stopped and called: “Don’t take it all. I need some to pay taxes with tomorrow.” The intruder gathered up most of the money and started to leave. “Thank a person when you receive a gift,” Shichiri added. The man thanked him and made off. A few days afterwards the fellow was caught and confessed, among others, the offence against Shichiri. When Shichiri was called as a witness he said: “This man is no thief, at least as far as I am concerned. I gave him money and he thanked me for it.” After he had finished his prison term, the man went to Shichiri and became his disciple.

  • Inhale and lift the right leg and hand off the floor.

  • Exhale and reach the right leg up and over so that the foot rests on the floor behind the left leg.
