TODAY'S TEACHING:Why do We say Namaste?

Is it a snooty way to seem like a yogi? Are spiritual people adopting it as a trend? Is it just a made-up, well-liked method of concluding a yoga class? Nope.

The history of "Namaste" is rich and profound. Your understanding of that will help you better understand and appreciate this widely used term.

Namaste was a novel way to greet your fellow yogis in the 1990s, when yoga first made a splash in popular culture. It was spoken tentatively and frequently sounded awkward. Now that it is said so frequently and with such ease, it's possible that we have lost sight of the original meaning and purpose behind it.

A good greeting is namaste. In India, people use it to say hello and goodbye. It is derived from the words in Sanskrit,

  • "Salutations," "I bow," or "I honor," is how you say "namah."

  • "Te" refers to you.

These two words have a "s" added to them, which is a Sanskrit phenomenon known as sandhi, which is the blending of two sounds.

Namaste is a way to acknowledge and respect the other person while also recognizing your own divinity.

You are both caught up for a brief period in an experience of being present with and acknowledging one another. You are being forced into a brief period of awareness.

In the West, most yoga sessions begin and end with namaste. This is a lovely and respectful way to express gratitude to the teacher for sharing their knowledge with you. If used properly, this is an opportunity for you to focus, be receptive to your teacher, and engage in a knowledge-sharing conversation.

Namaste is frequently said while the hands are clasped together at the heart in a praying position and a small bow is made. This is a lovely opportunity for us to show genuine love and humility.

The gesture is a mudra, in addition to being lovely. A mudra is a hand, arm, and finger position or gesture used to direct the flow of energy. Your hands are directing energy to our hearts in this position.

Therefore, bask in the grace of namaste. Allow its gentle lessons to permeate your mind. Silently say "namaste" to people you see and "bless them with your awareness" as you go by.
