The 2022 good news roundup...1. The energy paradigm shifted...

This year, two events may have permanently altered the energy paradigm. The first came when Russia invaded Ukraine, prompting the West to rush to wean itself off of Russian gas while stepping up renewable energy.

The International Energy Agency, which for the first time forecast that the fight will cause the need for fossil fuels to peak in the mid-2030s, called Putin's war "a historic turning point towards a cleaner future."

The moral and economic case for fossil fuels appeared weaker in 2022 even without the war, with banks like Lloyds and HSBC promising to stop funding new oil and gas developments. In contrast, spending on renewable energy increased.

In a Californian laboratory, scientists gave the world a peek at the energy of the future while smart money moved toward wind and solar. US physicists have solved one of nuclear fusion's greatest puzzles, advancing the possibility of almost endless, carbon-free energy.

2. Lost species returned, and others bounced back...

Even though the number of threatened species kept rising alarmingly, some animals came back from the edge in 2022, demonstrating that extinction is not a given.

The Wildlife Comeback Report, which was released in September, listed beavers, bison, and pelicans as the species that have defied the trend. The majority are the focus of reintroduction initiatives, notably the bison, which is once again roaming England after thousands of years.

Other significant success stories include the tiger emerging from the depths of the abyss, the fin whales reportedly making a comeback, and the rhino returning to Mozambique.

Though there is still much to be done, these victories in conservation gave people hope. The world agreed to stop and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030 as part of the COP15 global biodiversity agreement, which was signed in December. Another noteworthy accomplishment was a shark protection agreement.

3.  Nations got serious about plastic pollution...

The first shot in a year that saw increased attempts to reduce plastic pollution was fired on New Year's Day when a ban on plastic wrapping for fruit and vegetables went into effect in France.

The most important development occurred in March when 175 countries adopted a "historic" resolution to stop plastic pollution. Later, the EU launched its own plastic reduction strategy, and some of the most frequently dumped plastic products were banned in India.

For all the plastic that is currently in the ocean, it is already too late, which is where Ocean Cleanup comes in. The social company is utilizing booms that skim the waters for trash to attack the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. It claimed to have removed 100,000kg of plastic this year.

More good news includes the discovery that hazardous "forever compounds" can be destroyed and the fact that worm spit can aid in the breakdown of plastic.

4. Climate reparations moved onto the agenda...

Poorer nations have pleaded with wealthy nations for decades to make up for the harm caused by climate change. Their calls have gone unanswered for many years. Before now.

Delegates to the COP27 climate summit in the Egyptian desert in November decided to create a "loss and damage" fund to aid developing countries in managing a crisis to which they have made minimal contributions.

Although specifics haven't been worked out, the vow was seen as a success at a conference that wasn't very impressive. It came after prior promises by Scotland and Denmark to compensate developing nations for climate damage.
