TODAY'S LEARNINGEasy Tips For A Positive Mental State

Track gratitude and achievement with a journal. Include 3 things you were grateful for and 3 things you were able to accomplish each day.

Show some love to someone in your life. Close, quality, relationships are key for a happy, healthy life.

Sign up for some charity work. When you focus on helping others you instantly shift your mental state to one that is giving and helping others.

Keep it cool for a good night's sleep. The optimal temperature for sleep is between 60 and 67 degrees Fahrenheit.

Take time to laugh. Hang out with a funny friend, watch a comedy or check out cute videos online. Laughter helps reduce anxiety.

Go off the grid. Leave your smart phone at home for a day and disconnect from constant emails, alerts, and other interruptions. Spend time doing something fun with someone face-to-face.

Relax in a warm bath once a week. Try adding Epsom salts to soothe aches and pains and help boost magnesium levels, which can be depleted by stress.

Spend some time with a furry friend. Time with animals lowers the stress hormone - cortisol, and boosts oxytocin - which stimulates feelings of happiness. If you donโ€™t have a pet, hang out with a friend who does or volunteer at a shelter.

Practice forgiveness - even if it's just forgiving that person who cut you off during your commute. People who forgive have better mental health and report being more satisfied with their lives.

Do something with friends and family - have a cookout, go to a park, or play a game. People are 12 times more likely to feel happy on days that they spend 6-7 hours with friends and family.

Take 30 minutes to go for a walk in nature - it could be a stroll through a park, or a hike in the woods. Research shows that being in nature can increase energy levels, reduce depression and boost well-being.

Do your best to enjoy 15 minutes of sunshine, and apply sunscreen. Sunlight synthesizes Vitamin D, which experts believe is a mood elevator. And of course do some yoga!

TODAY'S POSITIVE NEWS

On Wednesday, a prohibition on using lead shot for hunting in EU wetlands went into effect. Advocates hailed the decision as a major victory.

The prohibition, which comes after a two-year transition period allowing countries to phase out lead, is applicable to all 27 member states of the EU as well as Iceland, Norway, and Lichtenstein.

Every year in the EU, a million waterbirds perish from lead poisoning after mistaking shot for grit, which they use to help break down their food. Shooters will need non-toxic substitutes.

According to Dr. Julia Newth of the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, "There is no acceptable amount of lead - it has poisoned wetlands for more than a century, producing a poisonous environment for species who depend on them." "This EU regulation is a significant step toward stopping the poisoning of animals in Europe by lead ammunition."

YOGAPEDIALizard Pose (Utthan Pristhasana)

Benefits: Excellent way to stretch your quadriceps, hamstrings, and hip flexors. Maintaining a complete range of motion will be easier for you if these muscle groups are stronger. In both your daily life and your yoga practice, a slow, deep, hip-opening stretch can help relieve low back discomfort or sciatica, release tension, and avoid injury. How To: Start in Downward-Facing Dog. Inhale.

Exhale as you step your right foot to the outside of your right hand. Make sure your foot comes all the way to the front of your yoga mat so your toes are in line with your fingers. Your right knee should be bent at a 90-degree angle and stacked above the ankle. Your toes should point out about 45 degrees.

Inhale as you bring your elbows to the floor with your forearms flat on your mat. Spread your palms out on the floor (use a block underneath the forearms here if necessary).

Keep your head in a neutral, relaxed position.

Exhale and press into your left heel to keep your left leg active. This will help ensure your hips don't sag toward the floor.

Stay for 5 deep, full breaths.

When you're ready to release from the pose, exhale deeply and straighten your arms so your wrists are under your shoulders.

Inhale and step back to Downward Dog.

Stay in your starting pose for several breaths.

Repeat the steps starting with your left leg forward to ensure the pose is performed equally on both sides.
