THE WEEKEND POSITIVE NEWS ROUNDUP1. A big win for Australian marine life...
Australia has killed plans for a new coal mine near the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland. This is good news for marine life and the climate.
Australia's environment minister, Tanya Plibersek, said on Twitter that the plans for the open pit mine would not go forward.
"The bad effects on the environment are just too big," said Plibersek. "There is a real chance that pollution will hurt the reef in ways that can't be fixed."
Australia has never shut down a coal mine before. Last year, it was found that the country had more coal emissions per person than any other developed country.
Plans to build the mine were made by the controversial coal billionaire Clive Palmer and his company, Central Queensland Coal, which is about 700 km (435 miles) north-west of Brisbane. Over 9,000 people sent in comments about the project, and most of them asked that it be stopped.
2. UK bank ends funding fossil fuel projects...
Natwest has joined the rush of big banks trying to get out of oil and gas projects, which is more proof that fossil fuels are losing their appeal.
As part of a climate change plan that will be announced in full on Friday, the UK bank said it would stop giving loans to new customers for oil and gas exploration, extraction, and production. Funding for existing customers will also be phased out.
As always, it's the small things that matter. Beau O'Sullivan, a senior strategist with the Bank said that the measures apply to most of Natwest's fossil fuel lending, but not all of it, and that existing customers will still be served for the next three years.
Still, he said that the news was "good." "Every bank needs to do this and fund clean energy four times as much," he said.
3. In a "mega milestone," India gives water to 80 million rural homes in just 4 years...
India's Jal Jeevan Mission, which gives people access to running water, is still one of the best, most untold stories of human progress.
Since the program started in August 2019, almost 79 million homes have been connected to a tap water line. This brings the total to 111 million, or 56% of all rural homes in the country.
4. Support Turkey & Syria...We try to keep our news section as positive as possible, but today we wanted to share some ways that you can help support the cause. Please read below! Tens of thousands of people have been killed and many more injured after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck southern Turkey last week, just 50 miles from the Syrian border. Since the earthquake, there have been hundreds of aftershocks. The strongest was 7.5 magnitude, adding to the devastation.
Many of the hardest-hit communities are in northwestern Syria, where people who have already been displaced several times by the ongoing conflict are among those whose homes were destroyed in the quakes. They are without adequate shelter, food, and basic necessities as temperatures plunge well below freezing.
Funding is urgently needed to help people affected by the earthquakes survive this crisis and begin their recovery.
Here are some links to reputable charities that are helping the cause. Any support would be appreciated: Charity for shelter, food, and medical support: Click here
