Quote of the day...

"If you love a flower, don’t pick it up.

Because if you pick it up it dies and it ceases to be what you love.

So if you love a flower, let it be.

Love is not about possession.

Love is about appreciation."

The Weekend Positive News Roundup:1. Time In Nature Was Linked With Less Drug Use...

This week, there was more proof that nature is good for people's health. A study of 7,000 people in Helsinki, Finland, found a link between spending time in nature and taking fewer prescription drugs like antidepressants.

Those with the lowest household incomes seemed to benefit the most from being in nature, which shows how important it is to make it easier for people to get to green spaces.

The research, which was done by the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare and published in the BMJ Journal, adds to a growing body of evidence that shows spending time in nature is good for us.

It also fits with anecdotal evidence from the Karma Gaia community: when we asked readers for tips on how to improve mental health in the winter, spending time in nature was by far the most common suggestion.

2. One Man Treating Pets of The Homeless...

Few people are willing to spend the day on Skid Row, and even fewer go there to give away free stuff, but Dr. Kwane Stewart, also known as "The Street Vet," is nearly famous because of it.

Kwane runs the 501(c)3 non-profit Project Street Vet, which takes donations and volunteers out onto the streets and to homeless encampments to give free medical care to their pets. Last year, they were able to help nearly 600 animals get medical care.

It is thought that 10–25% of homeless people in the U.S. have pets, sometimes for companionship and sometimes for security. Many people don't have the money to properly care for these animals, which they often love more than anything else in the world.

3. Meet The 90 Year Old Who Lives In His Own Hobbit House...

A woodcutter who built his own Hobbit house revealed he has never watched Lord of the Rings, but nevertheless lives in it almost off-grid despite being nearly 90.

Great-grandad Stuart Grant moved into the cottage he bought as a wreck with no roof and no doors in 1984 while he was renovating a house, but found it was so satisfying doing DIY on the quirky building which dated back 200 years, that he decided to make it his home.

He doesn't have a cell phone or use the internet, and he can't drive anymore because of his age, but he loves going out and meeting new people. This is good, because his home in Tomich, near Inverness, has been flooded with visitors since a French tourist board put it on a list of places to visit in north Scotland.

4. Renewable Energy Takes Over UK...

This winter, green energy has taken over gas as the UK's main source of electricity, preventing an even worse energy crisis. The Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) did a study on this and found that offshore wind was leading the way.

"Gas has become more expensive and there are questions about its supply security," said Jess Ralston, head of energy at ECIU.

The ECIU says that between October 1, 2022 and January 13, 2023, the amount of power made from renewable sources reached 34TWh, which is 2TWh more than the amount of power made from gas. It said that if gas-burning power plants had been used to make the same amount of electricity, it would have been the same as 7.4 million homes using gas all winter long.
