The Weekend Positive News Roundup:1. Wildcats could be released in England for the first time in hundreds of years...

The Wildlife Trusts have hired a specialist to assist with reintroducing wildcats to England for the first time in hundreds of years.

The European wildcat is now the most endangered natural mammal in the UK after being persecuted to extinction. They are larger than domestic cats, which are descended from African wildcats. Since the 16th century, the animal has not been seen in southern England, but it now appears likely that it will be discovered prowling the countryside once more.

The local Wildlife Trust has started making serious efforts to see if they can restore the fluffy predators after the Vincent Wildlife Trust determined that the brambly woods of Devon and Cornwall was the best area for their reintroduction.

2. A patient with ‘incurable’ leukemia was cured

Thanks to the most advanced cell engineering to date, a girl who had been diagnosed with "incurable" leukemia is now free of the illness.

Alyssa, a patient from Leicester, England, age 13, was identified as having T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 2021. All traditional therapies were used to treat her, but cancer kept coming back and it seemed like there was nothing else that could be done.

However, Alyssa became the first leukemia patient to get base-edited T-cell therapy in May when she enrolled in a ground-breaking experiment at London's Great Ormond Street Hospital. Base editing is a method of genome editing that "corrects" DNA mutations. Edited cells seek out and eliminate malignant T-cells.

After six months, Alyssa (seen in the picture) is in remission, living at home, and eager to start school again. Her mother Kiona stated, "To be honest, we're on a bizarre cloud nine."

The new medication is currently undergoing a study. Up to 10 T-cell leukemia patients who have tried all other forms of treatment are targeted for recruitment.

3. Clever Dog Collects Hundreds of Plastic Bottles During Walks

An intelligent recycling dog is assisting in the cleanup of the streets by gathering hundreds of plastic bottles while out for his regular walks.

Locals who like seeing the 13-year-old border collie Scruff take action to protect the environment have dubbed him "the green dog."

4. A nuclear breakthrough potentially changed everything...

It has been referred to as energy's "holy grail." But despite years of study, scientists have yet to realize the potential of nuclear fusion, which holds the promise of almost endless, low-carbon energy. Before now.

By getting more energy out of a fusion experiment than they put in, US researchers said on Tuesday that they had cleared a significant obstacle. No one had ever done this before. Even though the energy generated was just sufficient to power a kettle, the experiment's ramifications are significant and will be felt far beyond California's Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), where it was conducted.

Chuck Schumer, the majority leader of the US Senate, stated that "this astounding scientific discovery puts us on the threshold of a future powered by new clean fusion energy, instead of being reliant on fossil fuels."

Fusion uses the energy generated when atoms fuse together to produce energy as opposed to fission (or "splitting the atom"). Fusion, in contrast to fission, does not set off a chain reaction and generate any hazardous long-term radioactive waste.

Although there is still a long way to go until the technology is economically viable, the future of energy appears more promising.

YOGAPEDIAFlying Pigeon Pose (Eka Pada Galavasana)

Benefits of Flying Pigeon Pose:

  • Opens your hips

  • Strengthens upper body and core

  • Improves your balance

How To:

From standing, lift your right leg and cross your ankle over your left knee in a figure four position. Keep the right foot flexed. Bend your left leg and lower down to place your hands on the mat directly below your shoulders. Spread your fingers wide with the middle fingers pointing forward. Without shifting your weight, press your right shin into the tops of your triceps with the flexed foot wrapping around the left arm. Gaze down at the mat just beyond your fingertips and rise up onto the ball of the back foot. Engage the core, bend your elbows and shift forward. Push energetically through the back foot and lift the leg up towards the sky, straightening and pointing as you balance and hold.

Tips and Modifications:

“Flying pigeon is a challenging arm balance that requires a great deal of strength and openness. However, once you master this pose, you will truly soar.” If you’re giving it a try for the first time, wedge a yoga block between the ground and your forehead for additional support as you build up strength and stamina.
