The Weekend Positive News Roundup:1. How Agroforestry Can Help the UK Reach Net Zero

Agroforestry is the practice of growing trees on the same piece of land as field crops or pasture for economic and ecological benefit.

To reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, the UK is committed to planting 30 000 hectares of trees per year.

Planting 30% of grass pastureland with trees could help these countries reach their goals.

2. America's Top Young Scientist' creates headphones to treat ear infections

Leanne Fan has always been an inventor, starting in the first grade when she made contraptions out of toothpicks and marshmallows.

Now 14, the San Diego resident has stepped up her game with the Finsen Headphones, which aim to use blue light therapy to detect and treat mid-ear infections without the use of antibiotics. Worldwide, there are 700 million cases of mid-ear infections every year, and nearly 21,000 deaths.

Fan started working on the Finsen Headphones three years ago, and entered them in the 2022 3M Young Scientist Challenge. In October, she took home the top prize, earning the title of America's Top Young Scientist and $25,000.

3. Pilot Captures Jaw-Dropping Spectacle of St. Elmo’s Fire Phenomenon

A pilot has captured the jaw-dropping spectacle of St. Elmo’s Fire from his cockpit.

Airbus captain Luis Andress was flying from Miami to Denver last month when he encountered the scene.

It was part of the overall effects of Hurricane Ian when it hit the gulf coast of Florida this year.

St. Elmo’s Fire occurs when the atmosphere becomes charged and an electrical discharge of plasma is created between an object and the air around it.

This can happen to aircraft flying through heavily charged skies.

4. The Iberian Highlands were earmarked for rewilding

One of Europe’s least populated regions has been chosen as the site for a large-scale rewilding initiative, which aims to bring back lost species.

The Iberian Highlands in central-eastern Spain spans 850,000 hectares (2.1m acres), and encompasses mountains, forests, and protected areas. Rewilding Europe, a not-for-profit conservation organization, has secured funding to restore regional habitats. It will have a budget of around £690,000 annually for three years.

While rich in natural beauty, the Iberian Highlands has experienced economic hardship and rural depopulation in recent years.

Rewilding Europe hopes bringing wildlife back to the region will provide the local tourist economy a shot in the arm. Bearded vultures (pictured), red kites, and the lynx are among the species to be reintroduced.

Weekend Yoga Flow

By combining stretches, core activation, and deep breathing, this sequence will release tension so you start your day feeling refreshed.

AS YOU PRACTICE Allow yourself to pause and explore these heart- and hip-opening stretches as you build up to the peak pose, an exciting variation of Ardha Chandrasana (Half Moon Pose). This will help connect you to your core and root you down so you can expand outward with stability and strength. Meanwhile, breathe deeply throughout the sequence to further awaken your sense of vitality and inner purpose.

1. Tri Pada Adho Mukha Svanasana (ThreeLegged Downward-Facing Dog Pose) Begin with hands shoulder-width apart and feet hip-width apart. Actively reach your heels down as you lift your sitting bones up and elongate the spine. On a deep inhale, lift your right leg. Keep your shoulders squared.

2. Anjaneyasana (Low Lunge) Step your right foot forward and place your back knee down behind your hips. Place your hands onto your front knee, and sink your hips, drawing your belly away from your front thigh and pressing your shoulders back. Gently rock forward and back.

3. Ardha Ustrasana (Half Camel Pose) Turn to your left, pivoting your back shin. Place your left hand alongside your sacrum and your right hand on your front knee. Engage your core to lift your sternum, and elongate the inseam of your right leg.

4. Ardha Hanumanasana (Half Monkey God Pose) Turn toward your front leg, and straighten it. Lengthen your spine over your leg, with your fingertips on the floor. Bend your elbows (not your neck), and hinge from the hips to fold deeper. Keep your hips square.

5. Cat-Cow Pose Bring your right knee back in line with the left, coming to all fours. Inhale and lift your sternum, sitting bones, and chin. Exhale and tuck your chin, round your spine, and tuck your sitting bones. Breathe, and explore your fullest range of motion.

6. Tabletop, variation Extend your right arm forward and your left leg back. Keep your hips square to the mat by dialing your outer left hip down and your inner left thigh up. Engage your core, and elongate from fingertips to the sole of your foot. Hug your muscles toward the midline.
