THE WEEKEND POSITIVE NEWS ROUNDUP1. Rivers are reconnected to nature...
In 2022, hundreds of weirs, dams, levees, and culverts were removed from European waterways, setting a new record for this activity.
More than 515 miles (830 km) of habitat were reconnected thanks to the removal of at least 325 of them in 16 nations, allowing migratory fish to get to breeding grounds. With 133 removals, Spain led the pack, while the UK saw 29 removals. A dam in Norway was demolished after it had been blocking the Tromsa River for more than a century.
The World Fish Migration Foundation (WFMF) and Rewilding Europe are among the conservation groups that make up Dam Removal Europe (DRE), which released the statistics.
Director of the WFMF and founder of DRE Herman Wanningen hopes that the advancement can be adopted globally. "We have started a riverlution," he declared.
2. Eco Warriors Rewarded...
Known as the "Green Nobel prize," the Goldman environmental prize honors grassroots activists who go above and beyond to preserve the environment.
This year’s winners were: Alessandra Korap Munduruku (main image), who saved Indigenous Amazon land from mining; Chilekwa Mumba, who sued the owners of a polluting Zambian copper mine; Delima Silalahi, who reclaimed swathes of Indonesia from a paper company; Zafer Kizilkaya, who expanded Turkey’s marine protected areas; Tero Mustonen, who pioneered peatland restoration in Finland; and US fisherwoman Diane Wilson who “lost it all” taking on ocean polluters (and winning).
3. Seaweed into building material...
While tourists visiting Mexican beaches complain about piles of smelly seaweed, one Mexican gardener reckoned it was something like a gift.
The governments in places like Cancun have been required to clear away as much as 40,000 tons of sargassum seaweed, which smells like rotten eggs, but Omar de Jesús Vazquez Sánchez is steering it away from the landfills and into a kiln, where he makes adobe-like blocks that pass regulation as a building material.

CRYSTAL OF THE DAY
YOGAPEDIAHeron Pose
What is Heron Pose
Heron pose, or krounchasana in Sanskrit, is an unusual seated forward fold. Rather than the head moving toward the leg, the leg is lifted and drawn toward the head. The pose offers similar yet even greater effects than seated forward bend.
Instructions
Sit with the legs outstretched. Bend the right leg back so that the calf rests next to the thigh.
Exhale and bend the left knee toward the chest, then grab hold of the foot with both hands. Extend the leg upward.
Inhale, then exhale and draw the torso toward the leg and the leg toward the torso.
Breathe while holding the pose.
Exhale and release. Change sides.
Benefits
Stretches the hamstrings and calf muscles, and stretches the quadriceps, tones abdominal organs and promotes digestive function
LEARN SANSKRITPratyahara (prut -yah -ha -rah)
Withdrawal of the senses is how most people translate the Sanskrit term pratyahara. It is the fifth of Patanjali's eightfold yoga path's limbs and is considered to be a crucial first step before the more difficult forms of dharana (concentration) and dhyana (meditation). The word is derived from two Sanskrit word, prati, which means "against" or "withdraw," and ahara, which means "food" or all things we consume from the outside. Pratyahara can therefore be interpreted as gaining control over or removing oneself from any outside influences.
