THE WEEKEND POSITIVE NEWS ROUNDUP1. Our oceans just got a little cleaner...

A milestone of 200,000 kilograms, or 220 tons, of plastic has just been reached by The Ocean Cleanup, the only organization currently addressing the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP).

In recent years, the Dutch non-profit finished testing their new system 002/B. It has big booms that are a mile and a half long and can pick up several tons of trash at once.

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is not so much an island as it is a place where big currents and winds have gathered trillions of bits of plastic.

Bojan Slat, CEO and Founder of Ocean Cleanup, thinks he can clean up the whole patch in just 10 years by using data about currents and winds to predict the amount of plastic and guide the ships that collect it.

2. New mental health program for students in the US...

As part of a new mental health program, schools in the US are calling students to find out how they are doing. Early Alert is a service that is used by about half a dozen law schools. It sends texts to students asking them to rate how they feel.

Questions could be about academics, personal relationships, or financial stability. On a range of 1 to 10, how do the students answer? Answers in the middle to low range cause a list of resources, a staff person to reach out to, or an automatic call from a crisis counselor.

Chalak Richards, a dean at Pepperdine University in California, told Reuters, "It has made a big difference." "Every single student I've reached out to has been very happy to hear from me."

3. A new solution for eroding shorelines...

The dark water near the port of Rotterdam doesn't have big Lego bricks in it. Instead, it has a new seawall that is also a home for sea life.

The bricks are said to be the first artificial solution that really improves biodiversity, lasts long enough to stop waves from eroding the seabed offshore, and is strong enough to stop storms from coming. They are a kind of artificial oyster reef that will help protect mussels, fish, crustaceans, and other animals.

Coral reefs are beautiful places in nature, but they can also absorb 97% of the energy of a storm wave. This keeps the seafloor from eroding and protects the environment on land.
