Practice Gratitude: Give Thanks To Loved Ones

“Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.” –William Arthur Ward

As the holiday season approaches, it generally brings us closer to people. We are sometimes reminded of our affection for one another by that closeness. Sometimes it reminds us that we drive each other crazy, as family often does.

Fundamentally, it asks us to view others with the utmost gratitude for the blessings they have bestowed upon us. Some gifts are more immediately obvious than others—the type that come with praise, affection, and genuine esteem.

Others push us, stretch us, test us, and make us wonder if there’s anything to be grateful for at all.

Undoubtedly, some relationships provide greater challenges than others, but in everyone, we have the chance to develop and support others in doing the same. Every relationship teaches us something about self-care, self-esteem, forgiveness, boundaries, and caring for one another.

Here's how to express your gratitude to the people in your life...

Show Gratitude to People Who Love You

1. Share a specific example of something they did for you and how it made a difference in your life.

2. Do something little but thoughtful for them—like clean up after Thanksgiving dinner!

3. Give a long, intimate hug; or if you know they don’t like hugs, stick out your hand for a handshake to cater to their preferences and make them smile.

4. Tell them you’re there if they have anything they want to talk about—and let them know they have your full attention.

5. Give them something of yours that you think they would enjoy, and let them know specifically why you want them to have it.

6. Invite them to do something you know they’ve always wanted to do.

7. Encourage them to try something you know they want to try, but haven’t yet because they’re scared.

8. Offer to do something you know they don’t enjoy doing, like organizing their closet or mowing their lawn.

9. Compliment them on a talent, skill, or strength that you admire.

10. Look them straight in the eyes and say, “You make the world a better place.”

POSITIVE NEWS OF THE DAY

Thousands of oysters are settling into their new home this week: an artificial reef the size of a football pitch off the coast of north-east England.

The mature native oysters were released by marine conservationists on to the newly created reef in the culmination of a three-year collaborative effort to protect European native oysters. It has been headed up by the Zoological Society of London’s (ZSL) Wild Oyster Project.

Over-harvesting, disease and pollution means the species has declined by over 95% in UK waters since the 1800s.

Now 10,000 of the molluscs have been released on to 750 tonnes of ‘cultch’ – material made from stone and scallop shells – on the seabed near Whitburn. It’s hoped the new arrivals will form the foundation for a new marine ecosystem.

Celine Gamble, ZSL’s Wild Oyster project manager, described oysters as “ocean superheroes” for their ability to filter hundreds of litres of water a day.

DID YOU KNOW?

Grateful people sleep better. Writing in a gratitude journal improves sleep, according to a 2011 study published in Applied Psychology: Health and Well-Being. Spend just 15 minutes jotting down a few grateful sentiments before bed, and you may sleep better and longer.
