TODAY'S TEACHINGS:Prana Life Force

Prana is the energy we get from within. A force that changes every day, month, year, or throughout a person's life. Prana gives us energy and must be taken care of and used in a way that doesn't deplete it. For energy management to be sustainable, we need to know how our energy body works. We must pay attention to whether we are feeling energized or tired. We may feel "stretched thin" or "low on energy." If we have too much energy that isn't used, we might feel frustrated. If we have a lot of hard family or work obligations, it might be hard to manage our energy. Luckily for us all, yoga can provide a systematic approach to managing our energy body.

Using the practice of sitting or lying, can be a useful place to start paying attention to the layers of being:

The Physical Body - Anamaya Kosha

Start to pay attention to how you feel when you lie down or sit down. Don't force yourself to be quiet. Slowly make things more comfortable. Pay attention to how warm or cool the room is, and use a head cushion to support your body. Check to see if you can dim the light or cover the eyes. Think about your body temperature and whether you need a blanket or another layer. Stillness comes from being safe, supported, and comfortable. Follow the small changes in the body. Getting the feet, heels, hips, and shoulders just right. Check the support for your head and neck. Then take three deep breaths. Exhale to let go of more weight.

We are telling the body that we'll pay attention and listen. Focusing on ourselves helps us keep our thoughts in check. by seeing the body and taking care of it.

Awareness without judgment, guilt, shame, or denial is being aware of our comfort needs and being willing to meet them. This can grow and get stronger in us.

The Breath – Pranamaya Kosha

As we lie down comfortably, we can turn our curious attention to the breath and how it moves. The mind becomes its faithful friend, there to watch and help. By watching the breath, the mind takes a step back from being in charge and becomes more aware of the natural force that gives us life. We may notice that the mind wants to take over by lengthening or holding our breath, but the practice is to keep bringing our attention back to curiosity and wonder. When we breathe in, our minds may make a note of it by saying something like "breathing in" or "expanding," or maybe "rising" or "nourishing." As we breathe out, our minds can see: "breathing out," "letting go," "falling," or "cleansing."

All of these are things about the breath that the mind can pay attention to. It's a simple way to train the mind to be a loyal friend and team member instead of a controlling force that often works against us.

The Mind, Thoughts & Emotions – Manomaya Kosha

From the breath to the mind. We watch ideas come and go. They move up and down like the air. Thoughts that come in waves and have emotional energy fascinate us. Their feel and quality can either shake our foundations and make us feel less safe or give us support and help us grow. On intent and very often, we look for these qualities. We might think about past or future talks, depending on how "dark" or "loving" or "calm" we feel. We observe. We feel pain, anger, fear, calm, and happiness. As we improve our testimony by being present, we may see our feelings and thoughts fade away. When we notice, we get acceptance and the truth. In the same way that warmth and support bring peace to our bodies, being present for our thoughts and feelings without judging them brings peace to our minds and hearts. We stop passing judgment on them.

We feel both safe and held while also having a sense of space and freedom. Here, we find deep, lasting peace that flows from the inside to the outside and back again. Our peace becomes stable, like a natural wellspring of life. What holds us is also in us, and knowing this lets us let go and flow with life in a way that is both healthy for us and those around us.

DID YOU KNOW?

Dinacharya is our daily rhythm. One of the most powerful practices in Ayurveda is routine. There has always been wisdom in those rules our parents or caretakers set for us as little kids when they told us to get to bed at a certain time or to have dinner at a certain time. Ayurveda teaches us that having a routine and finding a rhythm can be incredibly beneficial to our overall health.

Four-Footed Posture

What is Four-footed Posture?

Four-footed posture, or chatushpadasana in Sanskrit, is a variation of bridge pose. Instead of the arms extended on the floor, here the hands clasp the ankles. The pose is often used as a preparation for shoulderstand. It gives all the benefits of a backbend while maintaining a soothing effect on the mind.

Instructions

  • Begin lying on the back.

  • Bend the knees and place the feet near the buttocks, hip distance wide.

  • Grasp the outsides of the ankles.

  • Inhale and lift the hips, pressing down through the heels.

  • Breathe while holding the pose.
