TODAY'S LEARNINGRelaxing Yoga Practice
Different people have different ideas about what it means to relax. Some people find that a five-mile run is a good way to unwind after a long day at work. For some people, that would be terrible. They prefer to relax by curling up with a cup of tea and a good book by the fire.
The same goes for yoga. Different types of yoga will be more relaxing for different people. But if you want to use yoga to relax, there are a few things you should think about.
Restorative yoga is probably the most obvious way to relax with yoga. With this slow, gentle style of yoga, your body and mind can calm down and relax. Because the poses are supported, you don't have to use much or any muscle power to hold them. This lets you quickly drop into a healing, soothing state. It's great for people who are recovering from injuries, dealing with long-term stress, or are just worn out.
Many people find Yin yoga to be very relaxing, especially if they like the idea of long passive holds but also like a fuller stretch. It's not as gentle as Restorative yoga, but the deep and sometimes very intense asanas can help release tension, especially in the hips and lower back. The strength of the feeling can also be a good anchor for a stressed or overactive mind, keeping you in the present.
Restorative or Yin yoga might not be for you if you sit at a desk all day, don't do much physical activity, or want a more active stretch to release tension in your body. You might find a more active practice, like a vinyasa flow class, in which you move actively through poses that challenge your body and help you relax better. This can be especially helpful if your mind is tired but your body is not, like after a day of sitting at a computer or in a meeting. In savasana, the movement lets you get some physical energy out, releases endorphins, and makes you feel "blissed out" and calm (corpse pose).
Lastly, keep in mind that yoga doesn't have to be physical at all to be relaxing. Yoga nidra is a spiritual form of meditation that is sometimes called "yogic sleep." As you lie down and listen to the voice of your teacher, your mind can settle into a deep state of peace and stillness. On the other hand, the pranayama technique of nadi shodhana, or breathing through the other nostril, is a beautiful way to calm the mind and nervous system.
You might have to try a few different yoga practices before you find the one that makes you feel the most relaxed. Keep in mind that what relaxes you may change depending on the time of day, your mood, and how much energy you have. Enjoy the time you spend exploring, and thank yourself for taking the time to relax.
WEEKLY ASTROLOGY
The full Moon this week is the last release before the start of the new astrological year on March 20, 2023, when the Sun moves into Aries.
By keeping track of the Moon's phases, we know that a full Moon is the peak of the cycle. The Moon has been getting bigger and bigger, getting fuller and fuller, until she can't get any bigger.
From here, the only thing left to do is let go.
As the Moon's light shines on the night, it's like a metaphor for how it shines on our inner selves, bringing light to our shadows and showing us what we couldn't see before. When you are aware, your natural tendency is to let go.
This full Moon on March 7, 2023, takes place in the sign of Virgo. It speaks to us through our bodies, our seemingly ordinary day-to-day functions and routines, habits, and rituals, and the grounded, practical, and deep medicine that can be found in clarity and organization.
Just an hour after the Moon is at its fullest, Saturn moves into Pisces, which has been a much-anticipated event. Mercury, Venus, and Mars, which are closer to Earth, change signs every two to six weeks, but Saturn stays in each sign for two to three years. As of this week, the moon is in the sign of Pisces. This is the start of a new phase that will last until 2026.

Avidya (uh-VIDH-yah): Coming from vidya, meaning “to understand”, “to know” or “to see clearly” and the negating prefix, a, meaning “un” or “not,” avidya can be translated as “ignorance”, “misunderstanding” or “delusion”. A concept central to both Buddhist and Hindu texts, avidya captures something beyond the conventional, shallow understanding of ignorance.
MANTRA OF THE WEEKLokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu
May all beings everywhere be happy and free, and may the thoughts, words, and actions of my own life contribute in some way to that happiness and to that freedom for all.
Lokah samastah sukhino bhavantu (Sanskrit: लोकः समस्ताः सुखिनो भवन्तु) is a Sanskrit mantra that often chanted at the conclusion of a yoga practice.
People say that this mantra is thousands of years old, but it is not in the Vedas, which is where many other well-known mantras are written down. Instead, it is thought that lokah samastah sukhino bhavantu is part of a Shanti mantra, which is a peace mantra.
Lokah samastah sukhino bhavantu is sometimes said at the end of a puja, which is a thanksgiving ceremony, as a group offering. This mantra is used most often in modern times during kirtan or group chanting. Often this mantra acts as a group offering of happiness for the whole world.
