Prana and Common Cold - The Ayurvedic Connection
The ancient science of Ayurveda refers to prana as the breath and reveals to us the many channels and pathways that must be observed in order to maintain the breathing system at its optimal functioning self. According to Ayurveda, different channels are used by energy to go through the body. These channels are known to facilitate the transfer of both energy and physical characteristics. The main cause of a nasal block is an allergy that affects the body because of a weak immune system. Reduced Ojas in the body directly result in decreased immunity that causes the human body to easily absorb pollutants, and one result of this is the common cold.
🌟 ASTROLOGY OF THE MONTH: September
September begins by bringing the energy of Virgo which is both calming and grounding letting us catch our breath before the seasons ahead. Starting on September 9th, Mercury begins to move backward putting us in another retrograde cycle, nudging us to focus on deep purification of the mind and come into harmony with the past. Miscommunication may take over in your relationships as the trickster planet follows its path.
On the other hand, the upcoming Full moon in Pisces on September 10th will intensify your emotions while bringing to the surface unhealed emotional wounds and persuading you to heal them from the root. Additionally, be aware of what you dream about during this phase as Pisces is said to fetch out the psychic energies concealed in everyone.
💡 Daily Tip
Neti Pot to Relieve a Cold: The Neti Pot technique Is a yogic approach that uses a pot filled with saline solution to purify the nostrils. The Neti Pot, although it has a longer spout, resembles a teapot and makes for a great tool for cleansing the nasal passage and opening up airways. When the procedure is carried out properly, this magical approach can clear mucus while also opening the sinuses and clearing blockages from the temple of the body.
Tilt your head to the side by about 45 degrees as you lean over a sink. Tip the pot up slightly, put the spout into your right nostril, and let the saline solution flow through. Now, start breathing through your lips. Right nasal canal> left nostril> and sink: this is how the saline solution will travel while clearing congestion and phlegm.

Ayurvedic Herbs to Ease A Cold
In hymns of the Atharva Veda, was the concept of the common cold first embedded. The Ama is said to elevate Kapha, which exacerbates allergy-related problems. Referred to as Pratishaya in Ayurveda, the common cold is said to be caused due to Kapha-Vata dosha, leading to congestion in all three doshas and resulting in a blocked or runny nose. The symptoms caused by this are - an increase in mucus production, irritation and inflammation of nasal passages, sinuses, and throat. According to Ayurveda, Agni is the origin of all life and creation. It functions as an analogy for every physical process in the body. Hence, it is said that you can fuel, enhance, and increase the efficiency of this fire with the food you consume while boosting immunity and soothing ailments with specific herbs.
Mulethi (Liquorice): The name of this ayurvedic herb, Mulethi, comes from the word 'mula' in Sanskrit, which means the root, referring to the procedure of making Mulethi powder - grinding the root of the Mulethi plant. This herb is believed to possess anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties and it has been used traditionally to treat a cold or cough. It is known to be one of the most efficient ways of clearing the respiratory tract. The easiest way to consume this is by brewing it into tea. You can do this by boiling the roots with one teaspoonful of Mulethi powder and one spoonful of ginger juice. There is no need to add sugar as Mulethi has a sweet flavor to it.
Honey: Honey can be used to clear excess Kapha in the lungs and soothe the respiratory tract. When mixed with milk, this ingredient can help balance Vata and build Ojas. A honey-onion concoction is another excellent cold remedy. Honey and sliced raw onions can be mixed together in a cooking pot and left to simmer for 30 minutes. Drain the mixture and store it in a jar. Take 1-2 spoons of onion-flavored honey every 3-4 hours.
Ginger: Ginger helps you get rid of the causes of your symptoms, not just mask them. Ginger is said to have anti-inflammatory properties similar to those of NSAIDs that help to fight off infections and inflammation. Ginger can be chewed raw or made into a tea by adding black pepper and basil leaves to soothe the sore throat.
Pippali (long pepper): Pippali is an effective herb to manage a cold and cough as it releases mucus, and clears your air passages allowing you to breathe more freely. Pippali, a warm, peppery flavor has decongestant and expectorant effects due to its Kapha balancing effects. Its energetic effect on the respiratory system is just the beginning as it also helps control chills and fevers that accompany a cold. Pippali also helps to thin phlegm or mucus and relieve cough due to dryness by giving off a cooling sensation.
Tulsi (holy basil) - Tulsi, also called ‘the Queen of Herbs’ or ‘holy basil’, has been shown to boost the body’s health in many ways including protection against infection. With its high nutritional value and antioxidant properties, it is said to boost immunity and protect the body from sicknesses. Tulsi tea is a quick yet efficient way to combat a cold. This simple recipe just requires you to add 1 teaspoon of dried tulsi leaves to 1 cup of warm water and boil for 5 minutes. Pour into a cup and sip it slowly, and let the flavor of tulsi do its magic.
Heal A Cold - The Yogic Flow

This yoga flow can help you start a new way of approaching your health and fitness regime by helping you manifest improved immunity while easing the cold.
As you practice: Be patient with your body and face its challenges with an open mind and heart. When you're ready to move into each pose, make sure that you stay alert and focus on your breathing.
Shishuasana (Child’s pose)
The asana helps to kick start immunity and serves as a support for the lymphatic system. To begin, make sure your knees are shoulder width apart as you sit on your heels. Then, stretch your torso forward as you slide your belly between your thighs. Bring the center of your third eye to the mat in front of you. Following this, bring your arms out before you and let them rest peacefully. Hold the position for ten more breaths.
Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward dog)
The next pose is Svanasana, which strengthens the shoulders, neck, and upper back and promotes blood flow and circulation throughout the entire body. Get down on your hands and knees, putting your hands just in front of your shoulders and your knees just beneath your hips. Turn your toes under and spread your palms out. Lift your knees off the ground as you exhale and stretch your tailbone from the back of your pelvis and as your heels touch the floor. Continue to hold this position for ten more breaths, and then, as you exhale, drop yourself into a lying position with your back touching the mat.
Setu Bandhasana (Bridge pose)
Setu Bandhasana helps to stimulate the meridian channels in the body and helps to increase blood flow for better circulation. The Bridge Pose is a restorative posture that gently invigorates, alleviates fatigue and strengthens the back muscles. It is a great pose for when you’re feeling under the weather as it not only warms your body but also calms the mind and improves mood. Laying down, bend both knees until your feet and knees are parallel and your heels are the closest they can get to your hips. Put your arms at your sides and relax. Then, lift your hips off towards the ceiling and hold this for about 5–10 breaths as you transition to the next pose.
Halasana (Plow pose)
Halasana can help to regulate the flow of oxygen and blood in your body, which are necessary for the healing of a cold. It is a great pose to open the chest and shoulders, create space between the shoulder blades, open the heart, release tension in the lower back and reduce stress. Halasana can also help relieve a head cold by promoting both blood circulation and lymphatic drainage in the upper body. Place your arms next to your body while lying down, palms pressed firmly to the ground. Lift your legs to a 90-degree angle. Lifting your pelvis off the floor as you exhale will then cause your legs to move back toward your head. Slowly drop your legs toward the floor above your head. To provide support, place your hands on your lower back. If you're comfortable, you can rest your arms next to your body while your toes are on the ground.
