Signs Of Healthy Boundaries

What constitutes a healthy boundary? And how can we appropriately draw the line? In a partnership, being able to express your ideas verbally is an indication of sound limits. Establishing sound boundaries is crucial to codependency recovery. They both contribute to and represent self-worth. Establishing sound boundaries is a crucial part of individuating and developing into a self-sufficient individual.

1. You know when to say no. Codependents hold onto resentment when they don’t set boundaries and usually feel guilty when they do. They see setting boundaries as harsh or self-serving and don't think they have the right to establish them.

2. You don’t let others abuse or exploit you. If you have sound limits, you won't allow others to transgress them. You won't put up with mistreatment or allow others to take advantage of you. You'll be vocal about your expectations and let others know what you think.

3. You can hold your ground when pressured. You won't allow other people persuade you out of your position on something important when you set an important boundary. Your boundaries can still be flexible to compromise in relationships, such as going out when you’d prefer to stay home, but not on important issues. For instance, you would adhere to your boundary if you believed that stepping out would negatively impact your health.

4. You’re not offended by others’ boundaries. You respect other people's limits and their refusals. You don't presume they don't care about you because they don't respond to you with hurt or anger right away. (In some cases it might be, such as with a narcissist, but still, rather than take it personally, it’s more information about what to expect from that relationship.)

5. You don’t feel responsible for other adults. Although we’re responsible for our children, with adults we’re responsible to them, but not for them. Codependents believe they are the cause of other people's emotions in intimate relationships. They often react with irrational guilt, frequently apologize, and try to “fix” the other person’s negative feelings.

6. You don’t take personally others’ criticism. You know who you are when you set appropriate boundaries. Criticism is filtered by your limit. You could think on the validity of the criticism. If it’s abusive, then the statement is more a reflection of the abuser, not you. Toxic shame can make your boundaries porous so that you have no filter and absorb words by other people as true.

7. You take responsibility for your triggers. When you overreact or are triggered, instead of blaming someone else, you manage your triggers in a healthy way. An apology may be part of this.

POSITIVE NEWS OF THE DAY

UK activists won a ‘stunning’ victory against big oil

In a landmark case, the UK’s supreme court has ruled that an English council acted unlawfully in granting planning permission for oil wells – because it didn’t consider the climate impact of when the oil is inevitably burned.

The judgment follows a legal challenge brought by local resident Sarah Finch and the Weald Action Group, which opposed oil wells in Horse Hill, Surrey. They argued that the environmental impact assessment carried out by Surrey county council should have considered the impacts of burning the oil, known as downstream emissions.

Friends of the Earth, which supported the case, said that downstream emissions are increasingly being left out of impact assessments when planning applications are made for fossil fuel projects, including North Sea oil wells.

“Gas, oil and coal companies have been fighting tooth and nail to avoid having to account for all the climate-harming emissions their developments cause,” said Friends of the Earth lawyer Katie de Kauwe. “This judgment will make it harder for new fossil fuel projects to go ahead.”

Ayurveda is the oldest, continuously practiced form of medicine in the world

Ayurveda is believed to be the oldest, continuously practiced form of medicine in the world, passed down over 5,000 years. It’s seen as the mother – or the source of all medicines. From India, it spread to Asia, to Russia, to The Middle East, to Europe. We will always see a lot of overlap of the principles of Ayurveda in most natural medicines practiced around the world. We’ll see these universal principles of mother nature in many cultures around the world as well.

One-Legged King Pigeon Pose A (Eka Pada Rajakapotasana A)

What is One-Legged King Pigeon Pose A?

One-legged king pigeon poses A, or eka pada rajakapotasana A in Sanskrit, is a deep and challenging backbend that opens the chest and develops flexibility in the hips. From pigeon pose, the yogi bends the back foot in toward the buttocks, clasping the toes in a deep backbend.

Instructions

  • Begin in pigeon pose with the right foot back.

  • Exhale and bend the right foot toward the buttocks.

  • Inhale and reach the right arm (and left arm, if possible) up and back. Clasp the right toes with both hands.

  • Breathe while holding the pose.
