TODAY'S LEARNINGSleep Relief: The Ayurvedic Approach

According to Ayurveda, the three doshas are in charge of sleep and other bodily functions (tridosha). These are the doshas:

Vata (Wind)

Pitta (Fire)

Kapha (Water and Earth)

Kapha is the most important factor in sleep because it makes the body feel heavy and tired.

The ancient Sanskrit book on Ayurvedic medicine, Charak Samhita, talks about six different types of sleep.

  • Natural sleep without external imbalances.

  • Sleep due to depression.

  • Sleep induced by increased Kapha. When a person eats too much chocolate, cheese, or fried food, for example, their Kapha dosha levels may go up.

  • sleep brought on by mental and bodily fatigue from hard physical labor.

  • Sleep from long-term illness.

  • Sleep because the body is out of balance or has been hurt.

Even though natural sleep that isn't affected by the outside world is healthy and should be encouraged, there are times when it may be important to take steps to improve health and create a healthier sleep cycle.

In the sections that follow, we'll talk about Ayurvedic tips for getting a good night's sleep.

Eat a Lot for Lunch

Ayurveda says that lunch should be the most important meal of the day. First, because the sun is at its highest point during lunchtime, the body's digestive fire is at its strongest to help digest a big meal. Second, a big lunch gets our bodies ready to go to sleep a little earlier in the evening.

Go To Bed on Time

One of the main reasons many people have trouble sleeping is that their sleep cycles are messed up. If you eat dinner at least two hours before bedtime and get to bed early, you can improve your sleep cycle, sleep better, and feel less stressed and anxious.

Practice Yoga and Meditation

Stress and anxiety are two of the main things that can throw off your sleep cycle and make it harder to fall asleep when you want to. For a healthy sleep cycle, it's important to deal with stress and anxiety.

A study that looked at 49 adults found that those who meditated and learned about mindfulness for six weeks had fewer symptoms of insomnia and could sleep better.

Foods to eat before bed

Getting good sleep is important for your overall health. There are many strategies you can use to promote good sleep. Making changes to your diet have sleep-promoting properties. Here are the best foods to promote healthy sleeping.

  • Almonds are a source of the sleep-regulating hormone melatonin.

  • Chamomile tea contains antioxidants that may promote sleepiness.

  • Kiwis are rich in serotonin and antioxidants, both of which improve sleep quality when eaten before bed.

  • Wallnuts are the best food sources of the sleep-regulating hormone melatonin.

  • White rice has a high glycemix index which promotes better sleep.

  • Milk contains tryptophan and melatonin which provide soothing backdrop for a relaxing bedtime routine.

POSITIVE NEWS OF THE DAY

Solar energy is demonstrating its worth high in the chilly Switzerland Mountains. The Lake Muttsee Dam, the highest dam in Europe, is proving to be useful not only as a water storage facility and a hydroelectric power plant, but also as a sun energy producer.

Why would Switzerland build a solar farm so high in the mountains when there are so many other places it could go? Even though it might not make sense, solar panels that are higher up work better than those that are lower down. They work even better in the winter.

The project was finished at the end of last year, and the panels are already making enough electricity to power 700 homes (or more than 3.3 million kWh).

FOOD FOR THE SOULTurmeric & Cumin Detox Tea

The final week of February could be extremely important for your health as your body begins a natural detox period. Heavy snowfall and the typical February dampness are clear signs that spring is on the way.

Take a cup of turmeric and cumin rescue tea to get through February. The warmth and rustic dryness of cumin absorb the extra wetness of spring. Its pungency widens blood vessels, facilitating easy blood flow through capillaries and reviving your skin's youthful radiance. Your circulation is energized and made to flow once more by turmeric, which eliminates winter stasis. Directly thin the blood, effectively process proteins, and metabolize fats are all benefits of turmeric. These seasonings work together to alleviate some of the excesses caused by winter and the impending spring.

Ingredients

1/4 tsp Cumin

1/4 tsp Turmeric

Instructions

For best results, grind whole cumin seed in coffee grinder or mortar and pestle. Place spices in tea cup. Pour 1/2c boiling water over spices and let steep, covered, for thirty seconds. Fill remainder of cup with room temperature water, or until liquid is cool enough to drink.
