SOUND HEALING (Everything you need to know)
Sound has been utilized in various cultures for thousands of years as a tool for healing. Whether through the use of mantras as with the Hindis, the Icaros (medicine melodies) of various Indigenous peoples from Central and South America, or Pythagoras' use of interval and frequency, these various techniques all have the same intention: to move us from a place of imbalance to a place of balance.
What is sound healing? In short, it’s a practice that uses vibrations (vocal or instrumental-like gongs, Tibetan singing bowls, and tuning forks) in order to relax your mind and body. Some proponents also believe it can relieve certain ailments, including anxiety and insomnia. Sound healers (often called “sounders”) say that it works by lowering blood pressure, improving circulation, and reducing respiratory rates. Science says, well, not a lot. While there are plenty of studies on the benefits of music and meditation on well-being, few large-scale clinical studies have looked at sound healing in particular.
What is it like? Sound therapy treatment is both a passive and participatory experience. The passive aspect is that you become more relaxed by laying down and slowing your breathing. By doing this, you prepare yourself to become the receiver of sound. It's in this place of stillness that you participate by becoming more open and aware of each sound that comes in. Sound helps create the pathway to this place of stillness the same as a mantra helps you to arrive at the still point of meditation. Someone can expect to feel very calm after a session, with a profound sense of well-being.
What can sound heal? Using sound as therapy can provide proven results for a variety of issues including:
Sleep disorders
Anxiety
Depression
Stress management
PTSD
Depression
Pain management
Your environment: It's important to consider what kinds of sound we take in from our living environments. Anyone who lives in New York City knows how painful the sound of a subway train screeching to a halt feels and sounds. Loud sounds can elevate our stress levels, create imbalances in our nervous system, lower our immunity and in extreme cases, cause hearing loss.
When we are stressed, our whole relationship to sound changes, and regular everyday sounds can become magnified and contribute to the feedback cycle of the stress, amplifying it even more. By utilizing sound therapy techniques, we can become better listeners and more aware of the sounds we take in.
Many of us already have a pretty good understanding of the benefits of healthy eating, and the same can be true of sound. This is another example where mindfulness practices like chanting and vocal toning, can help us to find a center and feel grounded. In doing so, when we do have those stressful trigger moments, we may be better equipped to appreciate and discern the sounds more as our own unique symphony constantly happening around us, rather than feel overwhelmed by random cacophony.
So, should I try it? Modern-day life is pretty damn stressful, and if you’ve tried other ways to relax with little success, this might help. In fact, some people find it less challenging than meditation because the sound keeps their minds occupied, making it easier to enter into deep states of calm. Now if you’ll excuse us, we have some ocean sounds to chill out to.

Pose Of The Day: Ear Pressure Pose (a.k.a Karnapidasana)
Targets: Focus, and stretch for the back of the body from neck to knee
Equipment Needed: Mat
Level: Advanced
Ear Pressure Pose is a calming advanced pose. In contemporary yoga classes, there is often talk about how to incorporate the philosophical eight limbs of yoga into your asana practice and your life. Karnapidasana is a rare yoga pose that literally does that, illustrating the principle of pratyahara. Pratyahara is described as the withdrawal of the senses, meaning shutting out external stimuli so you can turn your attention inward.
You can warm up to Ear Pressure Pose with Plow Pose (Halasana). It might be used in an advanced hip opening sequence or one focused on the hamstrings.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Begin in Plow Pose with the shoulders tucked under. Your hands can be flat on the floor or interlaced behind your back.
Bend your knees and bring them to the floor on either side of your head.
Rest the tops of your feet on the floor.
Allow the knees to apply light pressure to the ears, momentarily cutting off aural distractions.
Take at least five breaths before releasing your arms and slowly rolling out of the pose vertebra by vertebra.
Benefits
This pose stretches the neck, shoulders, back, glutes, and hamstrings. The mental benefits of reducing stimuli take practice, but you can get a glimpse into what it might feel like in this pose if you use your knees against your ears to cut yourself off from the sounds around you.
To continue your exploration, close your eyes and focus exclusively on your breath for the short amount of time that you are in this pose. Remember this feeling and try to return to it in your meditation practice during or outside of class.
