TODAY'S LEARNING
Sound Healing
Sound has been utilized in various cultures for thousands of years as a tool for healing. Whether through the use of mantras as with the Hindis, the Icaros (medicine melodies) of various Indigenous peoples from Central and South America, or Pythagoras' use of interval and frequency, these various techniques all have the same intention: to move us from a place of imbalance to a place of balance.
What is sound healing? In short, it’s a practice that uses vibrations (vocal or instrumental-like gongs, Tibetan singing bowls, and tuning forks) in order to relax your mind and body. Some proponents also believe it can relieve certain ailments, including anxiety and insomnia. Sound healers (often called “sounders”) say that it works by lowering blood pressure, improving circulation, and reducing respiratory rates. Science says, well, not a lot. While there are plenty of studies on the benefits of music and meditation on well-being, few large-scale clinical studies have looked at sound healing in particular.
What is it like? Sound therapy treatment is both a passive and participatory experience. The passive aspect is that you become more relaxed by laying down and slowing your breathing. By doing this, you prepare yourself to become the receiver of sound. It's in this place of stillness that you participate by becoming more open and aware of each sound that comes in. Sound helps create the pathway to this place of stillness the same as a mantra helps you to arrive at the still point of meditation. Someone can expect to feel very calm after a session, with a profound sense of well-being.
What can sound heal? Using sound as therapy can provide proven results for a variety of issues including:
Sleep disorders
Anxiety
Depression
Stress management
PTSD
Depression
Pain management
Your environment: It's important to consider what kinds of sound we take in from our living environments. Anyone who lives in New York City knows how painful the sound of a subway train screeching to a halt feels and sounds. Loud sounds can elevate our stress levels, create imbalances in our nervous system, lower our immunity and in extreme cases, cause hearing loss.
When we are stressed, our whole relationship to sound changes, and regular everyday sounds can become magnified and contribute to the feedback cycle of the stress, amplifying it even more. By utilizing sound therapy techniques, we can become better listeners and more aware of the sounds we take in.
Many of us already have a pretty good understanding of the benefits of healthy eating, and the same can be true of sound. This is another example where mindfulness practices like chanting and vocal toning, can help us to find a center and feel grounded. In doing so, when we do have those stressful trigger moments, we may be better equipped to appreciate and discern the sounds more as our own unique symphony constantly happening around us, rather than feel overwhelmed by random cacophony.
So, should I try it? Modern-day life is pretty damn stressful, and if you’ve tried other ways to relax with little success, this might help. In fact, some people find it less challenging than meditation because the sound keeps their minds occupied, making it easier to enter into deep states of calm. Now if you’ll excuse us, we have some ocean sounds to chill out to.

Who doesn't love something warm and sweet on a cool fall day? Warm spices light your internal fire when it's blustery and cold outside, melting away fall's chill from the inside out. This soup is perfect for a busy fall day, a savory dinner option, or a quick & easy lunch on the go.
Ingredients
1 tsp BLACK PEPPER
1/4 tsp CAYENNE PEPPER
1/4 c COCONUT CREAM
2 tbsp COCONUT FLAKES
1 tsp CORIANDER SEED
2 tsp CUMIN
2 clove GARLIC
2 tbsp GHEE
1 inch GINGER (FRESH)
1 whole LIME
4 c PUMPKIN
2 tsp SALT (MINERAL SALT)
1/3 c SHALLOTS
1 tsp TURMERIC
2 c VEGETABLE STOCK
Instructions
1. If you use canned pumpkin, use 2 cans of solid-pack pumpkin. If you use a pumpkin, roast in the oven for 30 minutes. Remove from oven, cut in half. Scoop out the seeds and set them aside for toasting. Allow pumpkin to cool a little bit, then scoop out 4 cups of flesh. Set aside.
2. Chop shallots, garlic, and ginger. Over medium heat, melt ghee in a large stock pot. When it melts, add onions, garlic and ginger. Sautee in the ghee for about 2 minutes, until onions become translucent. Now, all the spices and sautee for one more minute. Add pumpkin, vegetable stock, and 4 cups of water. Bring to a boil, and reduce to a simmer. Then add the coconut cream. Let cook for 30 minutes.
3. Meanwhile, spread pumpkin seeds on a cookie sheet. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Place in the oven and bake for 10 minutes at 350 degrees. Remove from oven and set aside. This is your garnish!
4. With a slotted spoon, add chunks to a blender or food processor. Transfer blended pumpkin back to pot and stir thoroughly with the liquid. Add the juice of one whole lime. Stir.
5. Serve hot and sprinkle with coconut flakes and pumpkin seeds. Feel free to crack a little fresh pepper and add a dash of salt to each bowl for extra flavor. Enjoy!
