TODAY'S LEARNING
Simple Ways To Be Kind And Spread a Little Love

When was the last time you experienced unexpected kindness from someone?

You probably receive kindness from at least some of the individuals in your life on a regular basis. Or at least I hope they are! Perhaps their generosity seems ordinary, though, because it consists of so many small acts that they perform on a regular basis. like asking if you want a cup of coffee when they’re getting their own, or saying, “I love you” in that rote way we do before hanging up the phone.

Little acts of kindness like this are always appreciated and worthy of recognition. However, there's something about an unexpected act of kindness that has the power to shake us out of our routine and give us a sense of being recognized, appreciated, and loved.

Kindness to Strangers

  1. Compliment a stranger on something non-physical—for example, compliment a mother on her patience or tell someone you love their laugh.

  2. Be forgiving of those walking down the street or on the road. Think about the possibility that the rude man who didn't hold the door for you is mourning the loss of a loved one, or that the driver who cut you off may be running home to handle a crisis. Another reason this is an act of self-kindness is that it prevents us from becoming angry!

  3. Offer to assist a stranger who is having trouble with something. For instance, help them find a difficult parking space, make goofy faces to keep a restless infant entertained, or offer to snap a picture when they are attempting to shoot a group selfie.

  4. Donate anything you no longer need or use to a homeless person in order to assist them in surviving the winter, such as warm socks or an old coat.

  5. Send a card to a sick child or write a letter to an elderly person who is lonely to help them feel less alone.

Kindness to People Who Serve You

  1. Be patient with someone who’s serving you, like a barista or cashier, and tell them to take their time.

  2. Express gratitude to your mail carrier for a job well done by placing a sticky note with the words "thank you" on your mailbox. Leave a $5 gift card to a nearby coffee shop, if you can afford it.

  3. Give a concrete example of how well someone who helps you out does their work when you compliment them on it.

  4. Start a call with a customer service rep by saying, “I imagine this isn’t an easy job, so first things first, thank you for what you do and for helping me today.”

  5. Send an email to the manager of a service employee, such as a bank teller, flight attendant, or store salesperson, expressing your appreciation for their hard work.

  6. Add a “Thank you” with a smiley face when you sign your next credit card receipt. (I generally make the dots the smiley's eyes and put two exclamation marks after "thank you").

Ayurveda Recipes: QUINOA, WALNUT & DATE WARM CEREAL

Quinoa Walnut Date Warm Cereal is a sturdy breakfast that can help curb carb cravings and so you maintain a healthy weight. Often, carbohydrate and sugar cravings are protein cravings in disguise. If you crave carbs, make quinoa your first choice. Quinoa provides the satisfaction of carbohydrates, but also feeds your hidden protein craving. Quinoa offers more protein than any other whole grain in a nice, easy to digest package. Its high quantity of protein coupled with walnuts sustains the hot, demanding appetite of pitta, while the grounding warmth makes vata feel stable and strong. Quinoa is light and slightly scraping, making it a choice grain for kaphas.

Ingredients

3 whole DATES (DRIED)

1 tbsp GHEE

1 tsp MAPLE SYRUP

1/2 c QUINOA

1/4 tsp SALT (MINERAL SALT)

1/4 c WALNUTS

Instructions

1. Chop walnuts. In a medium saucepan, dry roast walnuts on medium heat until browned. Meanwhile, chop dates.

2. Add remaining ingredients and continue frying the quinoa in ghee for another 60 seconds.

3. Add 1c water and bring to a boil. Lower heat and cover. Continue simmering for 20 minutes or until quinoa is soft.

4. Add maple syrup to taste and serve.
