TODAY'S LEARNING
Sunrise Meditation

Every day, nature gives us two incredible and inspiring gifts, the sunrise and sunset. But how often do we take a moment to pause and savor these moments?

Start the day with a clear mind and a burst of inspiration by timing your meditation to end with the sunrise, so when you finish your moment of stillness, you open your eyes to inspiring beauty.

By establishing this meditation practice, you're freeing up your mornings to be creative and productive in addition to carving out time to appreciate and begin your day with beauty.

Benefits:

  • Vitamin D strengthens the immune system, improves bone health, and can fight off depression.

  • Waking up early improves cognitive functions – Early risers tend to have better concentration, awareness, and energy throughout the day.

  • Early risers tend to have a better mood and mental health.

  • Waking up early takes intention and dedication that can direct focus for the day.

How To:

  1. Prepare the night before by knowing the sunrise time and set your alarm to give you enough time to wake up and get to a place to meditate before sunrise.

  2. Find a comfortable sitting position facing East. Make sure your spine is straight as you begin to relax your muscles and prepare for meditation.

  3. Set a timer to go off when the sun rises.

  4. Begin the meditation by closing your eyes, dropping your shoulders, and slowly relaxing the rest of your body as you bring focus to your breath.

  5. When the mind wanders, bring the focus back to the breath.

  6. When the alarm goes off, take a few deep breaths before slowly opening your eyes to a beautiful sunrise.

  7. Sit in silence as you watch the sunrise on the horizon and soak in all its beauty. You can also use this time to journal and contemplate what you’re grateful for.

Tips:

  • Use Lumy and SolarWatch apps to track sunrise time and placement in the sky.

  • Turn your meditation into a sunrise walking meditation.

  • Pair with other healthy morning habits like journaling.

  • If you’re meditating outside, be sure to wear warm clothes.

  • Stretch or do yoga as the sun rises.

POSITIVE NEWS OF THE DAY

Woylies Are the Ecosystem Engineers of Australia–Critically Endangered but They’re Making a Comeback

A critically endangered Australian marsupial is being seen at the greatest-ever frequency since a government agency started working to conserve them.

Australia is filled with small endangered marsupials that have been overhunted by feral foxes and cats, and the woylie, an herbivore native to the state of Western Australia, is an unhappy example of this invasive predation.

But in a forest landscape 3 hours south of Perth, a conservation program initiated by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions of Western Australia has recorded a record number of woylie sightings this year.

34 woylies have been trapped and tagged with GPS tracking anklets, where just 2 were found in the Batalling State Forest in all of 2019.

FOOD FOR THE SOUL
Ayurveda Recipes: Coconut Milk, Almond Butter, Date & Vanilla Bean Smoothie

Rich and smooth, this 'Coconut Milk, Almond Butter, Date & Vanilla Bean Smoothie' provides some much needed, sweet comfort during a long, exhausting day. Its thick consistency and nut butter protein content makes it all the more filling and satisfying and will help build strength as colder months approach. The scent of sweet vanilla and dates will fill the kitchen as you blend this simple smoothie combination. Pacify Vata and Pitta with this recipe and feel soothed, cooled and nourished. Make sure to use room temperature coconut milk, as straight from the fridge will be too cold and shock the digestive system.

Ingredients

2 tbsp ALMOND BUTTER

1/4 tsp CARDAMOM

2 c COCONUT MILK

5 whole DATES (DRIED)

1 whole VANILLA BEAN

Instructions

Scrape seeds from vanilla pod and coarsely chop dates.
