The ‘Declutter Challenge’: Simplify Your Space, Clear Your Mind
Clutter doesn’t just fill up our rooms; it also crowds our thoughts. When you constantly see piles of clothes, stacks of papers, or miscellaneous knickknacks, your brain interprets that mess as unfinished business—adding stress and blocking mental clarity. One simple yet powerful solution? A focused “Declutter Challenge.”
Why Declutter?
Reduce Overwhelm: A tidy environment can help calm your mind and lower anxiety levels.
Boost Productivity: Less visual distraction frees up mental bandwidth for tasks that truly matter.
Spark Joy: Releasing items that no longer serve you makes room for things that do.
How to Get Started
Set a Timeframe: Decide if this is a 7-day or a 30-day challenge. A clear deadline keeps you motivated.
Target Specific Zones: Start with small areas—like a single drawer or a countertop—before tackling bigger spaces. This creates quick wins and builds momentum.
Sort and Simplify: Divide items into “keep,” “donate,” and “discard.” Ask yourself: When did I last use this? Does it add value to my life?
Organize: Store similar items together in labeled bins or shelves. This makes it easier to maintain a clutter-free setup.
Making It Stick
One-In, One-Out: For every new item you bring home, consider donating or discarding one you already own.
Daily Maintenance: Spend five minutes each evening putting things back in their place.
Celebrate Progress: Snap before-and-after photos and share them with friends or on social media to stay accountable and inspired.
By committing to a Declutter Challenge, you’ll find that a tidy space often translates into a calmer, more focused mind. Plus, you’ll discover new energy for personal or professional pursuits—proof that sometimes, letting go is exactly what you need to move forward.

TODAY'S POSITIVE NEWS
Conservation is working, research showed
Conservation interventions are succeeding in saving species around the world, according to a study published in May.
Researchers analysed hundreds of conservation projects globally and found that interventions – including creating protected areas and eradicating invasive species – boosted biodiversity or slowed its decline in most cases (66%) compared with no action taken at all.
“If you look only at the trend of species declines, it would be easy to think that we’re failing to protect biodiversity, but you would not be looking at the full picture,” said Penny Langhammer, lead author of the study. “Conservation is, in fact, working to halt and reverse biodiversity loss.”
A separate study found that conserving biodiversity hotspots that are currently unprotected – an area totalling 1.2% of Earth’s land – would prevent the extinction of the world’s most threatened species. This was backed up by further research in September, which said the targeted conservation of 0.7% of the planet would save our rarest species.
ZEN STORY
True Reformation
Ryokan devoted his life to the study of Zen. One day he heard that his nephew, despite the admonitions of relatives, was spending his money on a courtesan. Inasmuch as the nephew had taken Ryokan’s place in managing the family estate and the property was in danger of being dissipated, the relatives asked Ryoken to do something about it. Ryokan had to travel a long way to visit his nephew, whom he had not seen for many years. The nephew seemed pleased to meet his uncle again and invited him to remain overnight. All night Ryokan sat in meditation. As he was departing in the morning he said to the young man: “I must be getting old, my hand shakes so. Will you help me tie the string of my straw sandal?” The nephew helped him willingly. “Thank you,” finished Ryokan, “you see, a man becomes older and feebler day by day. Take good care of yourself.” Then Ryokan left, never mentioning a word about the courtesan or the complaints of the relatives. But, from that morning on, the dissipations of the nephew ended.
