Three Energetic Forces: Pitta, Kapha & Vata
The doshas, which are composed of pitta, kapha, and vata, are among the most fundamental ideas in the Ayurvedic system. But what are they, exactly?
The doshas are essentially energy forces of nature, useful concepts that aid in our understanding of both the outside world and ourselves.
Vata, pitta, and kapha are each essential to our physiology in some way, so no one dosha is better than, or superior to, any other. They all have extremely distinct functions to perform within the body. Having said that, our health can suffer greatly when the doshas are out of balance.
It is useful to comprehend the elemental makeup of the three doshas as well as their larger function in the natural world before delving into the particulars of each of them.
In Ayurveda, the most basic building blocks of the material world are the five elements: ether (space), air (wind), fire, water, and earth.
Vata is characterized by the mobile nature of Wind (Air) energy.
Pitta embodies the transformative nature of Fire energy.
And Kapha reflects the binding nature of Water energy.
Vata
Vata is frequently connected to wind and the element of air because it embodies the energy of motion. Vata governs all movement, including all muscular contractions, tissue motions, cellular mobility, and communication between the mind and neurological system. It is associated with creativity and flexibility.
Pitta
Pitta represents the energy of transformation and is therefore closely aligned with the fire element. However, pitta is mostly liquid in living things, which is why water is its secondary ingredient. Pitta is neither stationary nor movable; rather, it spreads, just like the warmth of a fire permeates its surroundings or water follows the path that the ground dictates.
Pitta regulates nutrition and metabolism, body temperature, and the light of insight. It is strongly associated with intellect, understanding, and the digestion of meals, thoughts, emotions, and experiences.
Kapha
Kapha lends structure, solidity, and cohesiveness to all things, and is therefore associated primarily with the earth and water elements. Furthermore, the watery qualities of compassion and love are embodied by kapha. All cells and systems are hydrated by this dosha, which also lubricates joints, hydrates skin, boosts immunity, and shields tissues.
Imbalanced Vata
Vata is often associated with dread, anxiety, loneliness, isolation, and tiredness when it is out of balance. It can result in a loss of energy and physical stamina, interfere with normal communication, and create a variety of strange bodily movements, including shaking or trembling.
Imbalanced Pitta
Pitta, when it is out of balance, gives rise to fiery, reactive emotions like criticism, jealousy, and frustration. The etiology of heat-related illnesses, which can impact all bodily tissues and organs, is frequently an imbalanced pitta.
Imbalanced Kapha
When out of balance, kapha triggers emotions of attachment, greed, and possessiveness and can also create stubbornness, lethargy, and resistance to change. Physically, kapha tends to encourage tissues and organs throughout the body, including the intellect, to become stagnant and sluggish.

POSITIVE NEWS OF THE DAY
Finland has nearly eliminated homelessness
While homelessness has soared across much of the developed world in recent years, Finland is bucking the trend.
An investigation by the German newspaper Der Spiegel recorded around 3,600 homeless people in Finland today, down from 20,000 in the 1980s. In the capital, Helsinki (pictured), the number of people living without a roof over their heads dropped by 40% between 2019 and 2022, the newspaper reported.
Finland’s approach has been remarkably simple: invest in the construction and maintenance of welfare housing. Dubbed Housing First, the model has found a home for 60% of Finland’s homeless population.
The new right-wing government’s programme of austerity could put this successful homeless solution at risk. However, the model is being trialled elsewhere in the world, including in Houston, US, where it has been hailed a “gamechanger”.

Four-footed Posture (Chatushpadasana)
What is a Four-footed Posture?
Four-footed posture, or chatushpadasana in Sanskrit, is a variation of bridge pose. Instead of the arms extended on the floor, here the hands clasp the ankles. The pose is often used as a preparation for shoulderstand. It gives all the benefits of a backbend while maintaining a soothing effect on the mind.
Instructions
Begin lying on the back.
Bend the knees and place the feet near the buttocks, hip distance wide.
Grasp the outsides of the ankles.
Inhale and lift the hips, pressing down through the heels.
Breathe while holding the pose.
