Toxic Positivity

Stop ignoring your own feelings...

Quote of the day...

“One of the things I learned the hard way was that it doesn’t pay to get discouraged. Keeping busy and making optimism a way of life can restore your faith in yourself.”

LEARN TODAY:
Toxic Positivity

Toxic positivity is the act of avoiding, suppressing, or rejecting negative emotions or experiences. This could manifest as ignoring your own feelings or as someone else insisting on positive thinking in place of suppressing their own feelings. While it may be important to temporarily set aside tough emotions, rejecting negative sensations over an extended period of time can be harmful since it might hinder people's ability to manage their emotions and overcome their distress.

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with showing positivity, optimism, and gratitude—those traits help humans flourish. When someone responds to someone who discloses that they are distressed, for example, with "It's all for the best," "Just try to be positive," or "Good vibes only," then positivity is only troublesome when it serves to reject negative emotions.

Consequences, Examples, Signs, and Controversies

As the famous Robert Frost saying goes, “The best way over is through.” Even though it can be challenging to handle negative feelings, we shouldn't suppress them. Being human and navigating the world involves experiencing all of our emotions, both happy and sad.

In addition to failing to address the underlying issue, emotional suppression can exacerbate feelings of guilt, shame, melancholy, and worry. Even worse, it can exacerbate repressed emotions.

Emotions contain important information; they can point the way toward changes that lead to fulfillment, happiness, and meaning. Sincerity is a necessary component of wellbeing, and it is also fostered by real emotional expression.

How can I process difficult emotions?

Recognize your emotions to yourself, and instead of passing judgment, strive to explore them with kindness and curiosity. Writing in a notebook or talking to a family member or close friend about your experience might also be beneficial. Probe where these feelings come from and what they mean; meaning-making can help people accept difficult emotions and build resilience. Then reflect on how you might be able to change the situation. In the meantime, coping skills like mindfulness, deep breathing, and journaling can help.
