TODAY'S LEARNING
Ways to Process Emotions (So You Can Avoid Overthinking)

Processing your emotions is all about working to identify, understand, and deal with emotions in a way that’s healthy and productive (rather than destructive).

At times, it can be effortless to become detached from our emotions and sentiments, particularly when so many obligations vie for our attention—from work and family responsibilities to the constant allure of technology. Engaging in reflective practices such as writing in a journal or pausing momentarily to simply "be" can significantly enhance the process of processing one's emotions. Listed below are several methods to accomplish it.

Some emotions you might need to process include …

Disgust, Surprise, Anger, Frustration, Sadness, Joy, Confusion, Disgust, Frustration, Fear, Shame, and Grief

How to process emotions

1. Journal

Frequent journaling is among the most effective methods for processing one's emotions. By channeling your thoughts and emotions onto paper, you can gain a more comprehensive understanding of them without becoming too mired in your own thoughts. According to research, maintaining a journal can assist with emotion regulation by facilitating the prioritization of concerns and anxieties, as well as the recording of daily symptoms for the purpose of improving control. Therefore, if you frequently experience the emotion of wrath, for instance, keeping a journal can assist you in identifying the triggers associated with it.

2. Talk it out

One thing is to become stuck in one's mind. Sharing your emotions with a trusted individual, such as a family member, close friend, or therapist, is another approach. They may provide an alternative perspective on your emotions or simply be there for you to express to.

But remember: Sometimes giving emotions too much airtime, or getting too many opinions from different people, can backfire and leave you more confused about what you’re feeling. Therefore, ensure that you discuss an emotion with a trusted individual and then leave it at that.

3. Engage in heart-pounding exercise

While walking or a light bike ride can be beneficial for the body and mind, a heart-pounding exercise like running or a high-intensity interval training (HIIT) routine may be more effective when you're attempting to process your emotions, particularly anger or grief. HIIT workouts substantially decreased stress, anxiety, and depression, and increased resilience, according to one study.

4. Sleep

Have you ever been told that "everything appears better in the morning"? This is because it generally occurs; when we're fatigued late at night, we frequently ruminate and find it difficult to comprehend our emotions; however, after a restful night's sleep, we are able to perceive everything more precisely. Sleep is an excellent method for emotional processing and recharging.

5. Meditate

Although the primary purpose of meditation is to cleanse the mind, it can also assist us in processing our emotions more effectively by allowing us to pause and gain perspective on any emotion we may be experiencing, positive or negative. Each time you use a guided meditation app such as Headspace, you will be instructed to transition from a state of not thinking to one in which you actively engage in thought. A time like this is ideal for processing emotions.

6. Play music

Depressed and in need of a hearty cry? Play some melancholy music. Depleted of energy and experiencing lethargy? Consider an uplifting playlist that will motivate you. Music is an exceptional medium for processing a wide range of emotions, including but not limited to sadness, anger, happiness, pleasure, and frustration.

7. Have a good cry

As stated previously, music can induce a nice cry, and crying is generally beneficial because it stimulates the release of dopamine, a feel-good chemical in the brain, and can assist with unexpected emotional processing. Once you let it all out, you’ll feel so much better.

8. Scream

It can be extremely cathartic and pleasurable to scream when attempting to process your emotions. Scream into a pillow, into the void, or until you are able to expel the emotions that you are attempting to release. You will be alright as long as you do not significantly disrupt others.

POSITIVE NEWS OF THE DAY

Shoppers are voting with their wallets for the planet and ethical work practices more than ever before, say the group behind the Fairtrade mark.

The green and blue logo, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, guarantees minimum prices for producers in lower income countries and has become a globally-recognised symbol of fairly produced and sustainable goods.

“This is testament that, as happened in the financial crisis of 2008 to 2009, British shoppers do not trade down on their values when times are tough,” Fairtrade Foundation CEO Michael Gidney told The Guardian.

FOOD FOR THE SOUL
Ayurveda Recipes: Refreshing Cabbage, Cilantro & Aloe Juice

In Ayurveda, auto-immune and other allergic conditions are aggravated by toxins and heat. Spring season creates a perfect storm for allergies and auto-immune disorders. As soon as the pollen starts to fall, the flood gates will open as your body is naturally congested, releasing toxins, and hot in mid Spring.

When your liver is too overwhelmed to process toxins, the immune system kicks in as a backup. If you have an auto-immune disorder, or are prone to allergies, toxins only make things worse for your body.

Heat aggravates the immune system because it also stresses out the liver. The immune system is inherently hot, being warlike in nature. An example of the immune system's relationship to heat is a fever.

Cabbage, cilantro, and aloe vera are strongly cooling. Aloe and cilantro cleanse the liver. Cilantro is an anti-histamine, meaning it directly calms the immune system. Bitter taste cleanses and refreshes the liver, improving its performance. Bitter taste also helps decongest the blood for improved lymphatic drainage.
