How Yogis Boost Their Immunity

It's no secret that yogis have long been known for their ability to maintain a healthy immune system. It is because they believe their practices are a key factor in keeping them healthy and content. Yogic ways are all about tapping into your inner wisdom and strength—and that's especially important when it comes to boosting your immune system. The spiritual, mental, and bodily practices of Ayurveda are rooted in yogic practices. These practices improve your overall health, including the immune system. By leveraging various yogic techniques, you can clear out blockages in the body that can help to calm the mind and relax the body.

Kapalabhati

The term "Kapalabhati" is derived from the "Bhati" which means to shine or glow and "kapala" which represents the skull. It is an ancient practice of controlling the breath to achieve a state of heightened awareness and relaxation. It's one of the most important breathing practices in yoga because it helps your body to absorb oxygen more effectively, which boosts your immune system and makes you feel more energized. To perform, maintain your head and spine upright; inhale deeply until you reach your full lung capacity, as you then exhale. Now, do this with a contracting, quick motion. 15-20 such breathing cycles, in and out, have been shown to reduce stress and its negative health consequences as well as boost immunity.

Nasya Therapy

Nasyam, a Panchakarma treatment, is well-known for its dramatic healing properties. Nasya treatment is a simple approach for warding off infectious microorganisms that involves placing a few drops of oil such as ghee, sesame, or coconut into each nostril. This procedure is often advised as an Ayurvedic treatment for unclogging the nasal passages before leaving the house or stepping in for a shower for elevating immunity.

Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic practice in which you swish a tablespoon of oil in your mouth for a few minutes as it begins to fight bacteria and viruses from your teeth, gums, and tongue that can cause illness. The best oils for pulling are sesame seed oil or coconut oil, which will give you an added boost of vitamin D. Once you move the oil around and spit it out to eliminate the toxins, avoid rinsing your mouth for the next 30 minutes.

🧐 DID YOU KNOW?

Sleep is the most crucial element of one's health and well-being. While we sleep, our bodies perform extensive maintenance and repair on all systems. Our muscles are repaired and rejuvenated, cellular waste is eliminated, and our immune systems are strengthened so that we can wake up confidently. Sleeping seven to nine hours a day has been linked to improved health and combating ailments.

Ayurveda Herbs to Boost Immunity

Only when all seven layers of our body's tissues—Rasa, Mamsa, Rakta, Medha, Majja, Asthi, and Shukra—are strong, according to Ayurveda, can our body fight diseases. Hence, our immunity will be enhanced when all seven levels are functioning properly. Your bodily tissues contain a faint, unseen essence that keeps you healthy, called Ojas. According to Ayurveda, specific plants and plant products might boost our immunity by building Ojas.

Guduchi

Guduchi or Giloy is an Ayurvedic plant that has been prized for its curative properties to increase immunity by soothing Vata and Kapha dosha. Because of its high nutritional value and the alkaloids, glycosides, steroids, and other substances, it contains, Giloy is thought to be particularly useful. The herb helps stimulate the immune system and prevent infections by protecting the white blood cells, fighting free radicals, treating other respiratory conditions, and alleviating a chronic cough.

Turmeric

It has been demonstrated that the anti-inflammatory characteristics turmeric possesses are beneficial against infections and help to elevate general health. Because of this, it’s become the herb of choice for treating immunity. In addition to enhancing immunity, this plant contributes to the cleansing of the blood and lymphatic system. Its active ingredient curcumin has been shown in clinical studies to kill harmful pathogens, reduce swelling in the body and improve circulation, so your body can heal faster when you're sick or injured.

Amalaki

Amalaki (Amla) is a therapeutic fruit used to treat multiple conditions and can be consumed in the form of powder, extract, or juice. Amla is rich in vitamin C, which helps in boosting the immune system. It is one of the most commonly used herbs in Ayurveda because of its ability to strengthen the body's natural defenses. Amla has antibacterial, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, and anti-allergenic properties which help to maintain the integrity of the stomach lining and aid in digestion by stimulating the release of digestive enzymes.

Ginger

Ginger is a perennial plant that is native to South Asia and has been cultivated for thousands of years. The root of this plant has long been used as a spice and in medicine as it contains minerals, amino acids, enzymes, and coenzymes, all of which act together to prevent muscle spasms. If you want to incorporate ginger into your diet, a warm cup of ginger tea is the perfect way to reap the benefits of one of nature's greatest immune boosters. Ginger also contains gingerol, which is a compound that helps boost immunity by increasing the body's production of white blood cells.

Yoga Pose Of The Day

Dhanurasana (Bow Pose)

Dhanurasana increases the circulation of white blood cells by stimulating the digestive tract and strengthening the immune system. It assumes the shape of an archer's bow by lying on the stomach and bending at the waist. To adopt the bow position, lie on the abdomen with arms at the sides. Bend your knees and move your feet up as the toes point to the ceiling. Seize your shoulder blades and pull your head back as you look straight and align with your upper body as you arch. Grip your ankles with your hands as you press your thighs down.
